ARRC Gold Coast completes acquisition of Yatala organics facility, securing long term regional recycling capacity

ARRC Gold Coast has finalised the acquisition of Phoenix Power Recyclers (PPR) in Yatala, marking a major milestone in delivering the Advanced Resource Recovery Centre (ARRC) and securing long-term organics recycling capacity for the Gold Coast and the wider South-East Queensland region.

The $90 million investment strengthens the region’s ability to process organic waste locally, protecting residents from rising costs and ensuring waste is managed sustainably within the City.

The acquisition, completed following State Government approvals in October, fast-tracks the ARRC precinct and guarantees ongoing green waste recycling through a fully compliant facility operated by PPR on behalf of ARRC Gold Coast.

Chair of ARRC Gold Coast and City of Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said the acquisition demonstrated the City’s leadership and foresight in managing the region’s waste challenges.

“This is a strategic investment that ensures our city’s waste stays local, our recycling capacity remains secure, and our community benefits from cost-stability for decades to come,” Cr Tate said.

“We are working together to minimise the impacts of escalating waste transport and landfill costs, while supporting the Gold Coast’s transition toward a circular economy.”

The ARRC Organics Facility, operated by PPR, currently diverts more than 50,000 tonnes of organic waste from landfill each year. The facility produces around 20,000 cubic metres of high-quality compost annually, used across landscaping, agriculture, and horticulture.

Processing takes place in enclosed negative pressure vessels to prevent odour, ensuring the site continues to operate to the highest Australian environmental standards.

City of Gold Coast CEO Tim Baker said the acquisition strengthened regional capacity at a critical time.

“Across South-East Queensland, organics processors have struggled to meet environmental standards or maintain operations,” Mr Baker said.

“By securing this facility, we’re safeguarding and future-proofing organics processing for the Gold Coast.

“This purchase has the potential to save the City more than 150,000 kilometres of heavy vehicle movements each year, significantly cutting transport emissions and costs.”

CEO of ARRC Gold Coast Grant Gabriel said the facility represents an important first step in the delivery of the broader ARRC precinct.

“This acquisition gives us immediate, compliant processing capacity and a strong foundation for future growth,” Mr Gabriel said.

“It will enable us to explore food organics recovery over time, create new jobs and ensure the Gold Coast remains a leader in sustainable resource recovery.”

The facility’s previous owners, Phoenix Power Recyclers, will continue to operate the site under contract with ARRC Gold Coast, ensuring continuity of expertise and ongoing compliance with its Environmental Authority.
