Joining a select group of twelve wine estates in France to receive the world’s most rigorous independent sustainability certification

Château Troplong Mondot, the Premier Grand Cru Classé estate overlooking the picturesque village of Saint-Émilion, has been awarded B Corp certification, joining a global movement of businesses that meet the highest independently verified standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and governance. Only 12 wine estates in France hold this distinction.

The certification follows nearly a year of auditing and assessment, encompassing the estate’s viticulture, boutique accommodation, and its Michelin-starred and Green Star restaurant, Les Belles Perdrix. It is a recognition of more than three decades of responsible practice – and a commitment to measurable progress in the years ahead.

A TRUE LEADER IN SUSTAINABLE VITICULTURE

At Troplong Mondot, the environmental credentials that underpinned the B Corp assessment are the result of sustained, measurable action, having been a pioneer of sustainable viticulture for over three decades, eliminating herbicides more than twenty years ago, insecticides in 2010, and anti-botrytis treatments in 2018.

Specific initiatives assessed as part of the certification include:

• Horses ploughing 100% of the vineyard, replacing tractors to preserve soil structure and microbial life
• Pruned vine shoots repurposed as fuel pellets for the estate’s heating system
• Zero organic waste across the estate and restaurant; elimination of all single-use packaging
• A 6,800 m² permaculture vegetable garden supplying Michelin-starred and Michelin green starred restaurant, Les Belles Perdrix
• Less than one tonne of CO₂ emitted annually for heating all estate buildings
• A micro-forest planted within the estate’s two-hectare historic woodland
• Zero herbicides, insecticides, or fungicides across all operations

These initiatives have already earned Troplong Mondot recognition as the first French winery to achieve Silver Membership of the International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA), and a place in the UN’s Race to Zero initiative, with a target of carbon neutrality by 2050.

COMMITMENT TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY 

B Corp certification also measures social and governance performance alongside environmental impact. At Troplong Mondot, this means a strong focus on the wellbeing and development of its team, fair and inclusive working conditions, and active investment in the local economy of Saint-Émilion and the wider Bordeaux region.

90% of suppliers to Les Belles Perdrix are located within 30 minutes of the restaurant; for wine-related suppliers, two-thirds are based in the same department. Internally, initiatives such as the collective cultivation of a vineyard plot, workplace ergonomic design, and the use of exoskeletons for physical tasks reflect an approach to employment that goes beyond regulatory compliance.

ELSEWHERE ON THE ESTATE…

The B Corp certification arrives alongside a strong year of recognition across the estate. In March, Pastry chef Adrien Salavert of Les Belles Perdrix was named French Dessert Champion 2026, competing against eight of the country’s top pastry chefs at the national final. His award-winning creation is now served at the restaurant, offering guests the opportunity to experience the dish that secured this national title.

The estate’s 2026 programming continues to delight guests of all ages. The family programme centres on a guided mini electric Land Rover tour of the vineyard, with stops at the permaculture garden — where children are introduced to seasonal produce alongside the culinary team from Les Belles Perdrix — and the henhouse and pig-pen, where the estate’s approach to reducing organic waste comes to life. The experience ends with refreshments for children and a wine tasting for adults.

For those visiting in autumn, ‘Inside the Grape Harvest’ offers direct participation in the annual vendange: grape-picking across the 43-hectare vineyard, time with the winemaking team in the cellar, and a relaxed lunch with Troplong Mondot wines.

ABOUT B CORP CERTIFICATION

B Corp certification is awarded by B Lab, an international non-profit organisation founded in 2006 in the United States. It assesses a company’s overall social, environmental and economic performance. The score is made public and the certification must be renewed every three years, with a requirement to demonstrate progress. By 2026, around 10,000 companies worldwide and approximately 600 SMEs in France will be certified, including just a dozen in the French wine sector.
