Chunky Move 2018

Melbourne’s premiere contemporary dance company, Chunky Move seeks to redefine contemporary dance in powerful and nuanced ways in an evolving cultural landscape. Led by internationally acclaimed choreographer Anouk van Dijk, 2018 will see new works, international tours and workshops, public and school programs plus more.

Common Ground

Chunky Move Studios, Thursday 26 April – Saturday 5 May 2018

The world premiere of Common Ground by Artistic Director Anouk van Dijk.

How do you stand when the ground around you is moving, what forces push and pull and how do you find what unites us all?

Anouk van Dijk explores the universality of our shared experiences, the common ground that unites us and sometimes can cause rupture and disturbance.

‘There is an incredible sense of instability in the world – social, political, economic and environmental, this affects us on a visceral level, and in this new full-length work, I’m exploring this and how we can stand together’, says van Dijk.

Visually arresting, Common Ground is dynamic encounter between two dancers – roles are reinvented. Boundaries transcended. Territories shift.

Anouk van Dijk’s new work brings together two of Australia’s leading contemporary dancers, Tara Jade Samaya (ANTI-GRAVITY, Chunky Move) and Richard Cilli (CounterMove, Sydney Dance Company).

Common Ground features a stellar creative team with Lighting Design by Paul Jackson, Set & Costume Design by Marg Horwell and Sound Design by Jethro Woodward.

Common Ground at Chunky Move Studios, 111 Sturt St, Southbank from 26 April – 5 May.

Next Move 2018

Chunky Move Studios, Thursday 8 – Saturday 17 November 2018.

Chunky Move is excited to announce that independent dance artists Joel Bray and Lauren Langlois have been announced as Next Move 2018 commissioned artists.

The double-bill will feature new works by both artists. Joel Bray is developing a contemporary exploration of the Wiradjuri word for ceremony, Burbang. The work is based on the articles published by RH Mathews, a colonial gentleman anthropologist and government surveyor who developed relationships with the Wiradjuri peoples living traditionally on the land.

Lauren Langlois will be developing a new work that is an absurd and darkly comic dystopian vision of the future. A hybrid of contemporary dance and physical theatre featuring Lauren’s finely tuned development of character-based movement narratives, performed by Lauren herself and James Vu Ahn Pham

Chunky Move’s Next Move program for 2018 continues the Company’s commitment to supporting the next generation of Australia’s leading dance makers. The commissioning program, now entering its 11th year is designed to bridge the divide between young makers creating independent work and established choreographers. It offers them full creative control and full-access to the resources and producing expertise of the Company

International Touring

Throughout 2018, Chunky Move continues its touring program, taking world class Australian contemporary dance around the globe.

The Company will present the European premiere of Anti—GRAVITY at SPRING Festival, Utrecht on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 May.

Chunky Move will also be touring Complexity of Belonging to six major theatres throughout the Netherlands and will open the December Dance Festival in Brugge, Belgium later this year.

Through these tours, Chunky Move deepens the Company’s relationship with SPRING Festival and continues to build its European audiences.

Artist Development

In 2018, Chunky Move continues its ambitious Artist Development initiatives including the Maximised Program which provides in-kind support to Australian contemporary dance practitioners producing and presenting their own work.

This program aims to alleviate the producing pressure often experienced by independent artists by providing access to rehearsal space and in-house production support. The 2018 Maximised Program has supported choreographer Melanie Lane for her new work Personal Effigies which won the 2018 Keir Choreographic Award.

In addition to the Maximised Program, Chunky Move supports emerging-to-mid-career dance artists through a variety of opportunities including choreographic secondments, dance secondments and the coveted Artistic Associate opportunity which is offered to inspiring mid-career dance artists wishing to step into leadership positions within the industry. For 2018, Chunky Move’s Artistic Associate is Australian director, choreographer and dance animateur Alice Lee Holland.

One Body, One Career Countertechnique Intensive

Chunky Move Studios, Monday 2 – Friday 13 July 2018

Initiated by Anouk van Dijk in 2006, and now in its 6th Asia-Pacific edition, this two-week intensive brings together Australian and international participants and offers a first-hand opportunity to learn about van Dijk’s Countertechnique, a movement method and training system for dancers.

Public Programs / Schools

Chunky Move runs contemporary dance and yoga classes all year round for the general public with special workshops and classes for all levels. Classes are run by Chunky Move’s teachers and held in the Company’s state-of-the-art, fully equipped dance studios. Classes can be booked through the Chunky Move Studios app, now available in the iTunes App Store.

For young dancers, Chunky Move’s Easter Intensive offers energetic and creative young movers ages 14-25 years the opportunity to experience contemporary dance. Across the three-day intensive, four independent Australian dance artists will lead daily sessions in contemporary dance technique, improvisation, repertoire and creative development. Together, the team will explore choreographic themes and material from Chunky Move dance works including Depth of Field and Complexity of Belonging.

The 2018 Easter Intensive is from Wednesday 4 – Friday 6 April, 10am – 4pm, at the Victorian College of the Arts

Chunky Move Studios, 111 Sturt St, Southbank.  For bookings and more information:    www.chunkymove.com.au
