I joined the Monash Writers Group several months ago. It’s been good to be able to sit with fellow writers and talk about our writing. We’re meant to bring some writing to share with the group and receive feedback. It makes me feel as if I’m back at uni as this is something we did for some of my classes. I always found the feedback to be phenomenal.
Every so often the group puts together an anthology. I’ve bought several over the years and this last one I was able to attend the launch. The book was well along the editing and publishing process when I joined so I had no hope of submitting a story for this book, but I was still excited to attend the launch.
The book is full of lovely writing. There’s a big mixture here. We’ve got four fiction short stories written by Lenette Griffin, Robert New, R. Andrew Russell and Erica Tippett. Then there are some poems written by Robert Eisler, Katharina Fares, Sung-Ju Suya Lee and Dilys Smith. Finally we finish with four memoirs written by Sakuntala Gananathan, Marlene Laurent, Gordon Smith and Premila Thurairatnam.
Each one hit me in the feels, especially the memoirs. They were varied and it just goes to show how many different pieces of writing can be produced with the same theme.
I’m sure I’ll read this book again, seeing as I’ve already reread the last story instead of writing this article. It totally hit me in the feels for the second time. I’ll called ‘I’ll Never Forget… My Grandad is Sleeping…’ and reminds me that children see things differently to adults.
