Indigenous Elder Demands Accountability from Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus

“Genocide is a crime, not just globally, but right here in our backyard. If we are
serious about stopping genocide around the world, we must start by eradicating it
here in so-called Australia. This nation cannot claim to be civilised if it allows
genocide to continue unchecked, generation after generation” Uncle Robbie says.

Krautatungalung Elder Uncle Robbie Thorpe has issued a powerful call to action,
urging Australians to stop ignoring the genocide happening within their own borders.
In his ongoing legal battle, Uncle Robbie has singled out Attorney-General Mark
Dreyfus as emblematic of Australia’s role in obstructing justice for Aboriginal Peoples
and upholding a legacy of colonial violence and genocide in so-called Australia, in
defiance of the 1948 Genocide Convention.

Uncle Robbie’s legal actions emphasise Australia’s responsibility to recognise
genocide as a “peremptory legal norm”—a standard fundamental to any civilised
society. Uncle Robbie contends that Australia’s legal and political system, led by
figures like Attorney-General Dreyfus, actively prevents Aboriginal Peoples from
accessing genocide protections and dismisses Indigenous claims as “frivolous and
vexatious.” Thus, denying Indigenous Peoples access to the very laws meant to
protect them from these heinous crimes.

“Genocide is a crime, and Australia is complicit in the global genocide business,”
Uncle Robbie stated. “We’re calling on this court to acknowledge the genocide
against us in so-called Australia and to hold its leaders accountable. People like
Dreyfus protect a system that hides from its criminal origins while creating untold
suffering around the world.”

Uncle Robbie has filed for constitutional declarations protecting sacred sites and
cultural practices, including the right to maintain fires at Camp Sovereignty. This
case highlights what Uncle Robbie describes as the stark denial of Aboriginal
sovereignty, an injustice embedded in Australia’s legal framework since colonisation.
This dismissal of Aboriginal rights, Uncle Robbie argues, perpetuates the conditions
that fuel genocidal actions and the erosion of Aboriginal culture and law.

“It is a disgrace for so-called Australia to posture as a defender of human rights on
the world stage while ignoring 254 years of genocide against Aboriginal Peoples
right here,” Uncle Robbie added. “If we can’t prevent genocide here, we’re no
example to anyone. This fight is about whether Australia will finally acknowledge
Aboriginal law and sovereignty.”
