OECD has just released a new set of Environment at a Glance (EAG) Indicators.

Updated twice a year, the Indicators provide a comprehensive snapshot of countries’ environmental performance. Drawing on the latest data, and complemented by interactive dashboards and thematic webbooks, the EAG platform helps track progress across key areas: climate, biodiversity, water, air quality, circular economy, and ocean resources.

Each thematic section includes:

  • An overview of the issues and policy challenges
  • A summary of how progress and performance are measured
  • Key indicators and data visualisations (e.g. GHG emissions, drought, policy responses)
  • In addition, country notes combine environmental data (including on selected policy instruments and innovation) with socio-economic context to facilitate the interpretation of trends and compare progress

For example, in the climate indicators section, you will find among many others the following statistics:

  • Land surface temperatures in OECD countries rose steadily over recent decades, averaging 0.9°C above the 1981–2010 baseline from 2019–2023 – a significant increase.
  • In 2023, the highest average annual temperature changes were recorded in Canada (+2.2°C) and Switzerland (+2.1°C), among OECD and its partner countries.
  • Exposure to extreme heat is rising: 12% more people in OECD and partner countries experienced hot days in 2019–2023 compared to the 1981–2010 reference period.
  • An estimated 1.4 billion people were highly exposed to extreme heat in 2019–2023, particularly in Saudi Arabia (98.3%), India (97.4%), Thailand (93.6%), and Israel (91%).

INDEPENDENT NEWS IS IMPORTANT.
