It was a night to remember on 30 July 2025, as Melbourne’s Playhouse at Arts Centre came to life with the Australian premiere of Kimberly Akimbo: A Musical. The anticipation in the foyer buzzed with the infectious energy of musical theatre fans eager to witness the arrival of a Broadway phenomenon that has already swept New York—claiming five Tony Awards, including the prestigious Best Musical.

The red carpet shimmered with star power as highly acclaimed photographer Lord Murray Schoorman captured a parade of theatre luminaries and excited fans. Inside, the air was thick with excitement—seats filled with a mix of devotees, first-timers, and the city’s arts glitterati ready for a night of laughter, tears, and spellbinding performances.

Directed by the visionary Mitchell Butel—himself a four-time Helpmann Award-winner—the production assembled one of Australia’s most dazzling casts. Marina Prior, beloved for her legendary work in musicals, brought heart and soul to the role of Kimberly, the teenage heroine aged by a rare genetic condition. The powerhouse talents of Casey Donovan (as mischievous Aunt Debra) and Christie Whelan Browne (as mum Patsy Levaco) filled the stage with warmth, wit, and wild comedic energy.

The supporting cast—Marty Alix, Allycia Angeles, Alana Iannace, Nathan O’Keefe, Jacob Rozario, and Darcy Wain—captured the chaos and camaraderie of suburban misfits with uproarious charm and emotional nuance.
With music by the brilliant Jeanine Tesori (Fun Home, Caroline, or Change) and a smart, witty book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, the show soared. Tesori’s melodies drifted from soul-stirring to hilarious, while Lindsay-Abaire’s razor-sharp words kept the audience laughing and reflecting throughout. The Playhouse was swept up by tunes that lingered long after curtain call.

The creative team delivered a feast for the senses: Jonathon Oxlade’s set transported viewers to quirky 1990s New Jersey, Amy Campbell’s choreography pulsed with life, and the technical wizardry of Matt Scott (lighting), Kym Purling (musical direction), Andrew Poppleton (sound), and Matt Byrne (video) brought every whimsical detail to seamless fruition.
What truly set “Kimberly Akimbo” apart was its heart—a story that found humour in hardship, joy in the unexpected, and hope in the face of adversity. The show tugged at heartstrings and left many dabbing eyes, only to send the audience roaring with laughter moments later. Its offbeat energy and defiant optimism brought the house to its feet for a thunderous standing ovation.

Melbourne Theatre Company Artistic Director Anne-Louise Sarks summed it up perfectly: “A musical heroine like no other and a story that is equal parts rich human drama, joy and laughter, and unconventional romance. This is one you do not want to miss.”
For those lucky enough to witness opening night, “Kimberly Akimbo” was far more than a musical—it was an electric celebration of living life to the fullest. Melbourne has fallen in love. Whilst we did not receive tickets to see the opening night show, we have purchased our tickets to watch it later in the week.
Kimberly Akimbo runs at Arts Centre Melbourne’s Playhouse from 26 July to 30 August 2025. Secure your tickets—this season is strictly limited and not-to-be-missed.
