A leading provider of energy solutions is seeing record demand for solar battery storage with a 500 percent spike in the past 12 months as people reduce energy bills further and shield their homes from blackouts in future storms.
“Home battery storage is the next frontier following the adoption of rooftop solar, which has rapidly accelerated over the past 20 years as people understand the economic benefits,” said David Sedighi, Voltx Energy Chief Operating Officer.
“This rapid growth in the uptake of household battery systems, which is forecast to grow a further 66 percent this quarter alone, mirrors international trends, with countries like Germany seeing more than half a million household battery installations in the last year alone,” added Mr Sedighi.
“Australia is set to follow suit, with up to 160,000 new battery installations nationwide expected in the next 12 months.
“We alone are anticipating an eight-fold increase from around 1,500 households per year to over 12,000,” he said.
VoltX Energy has already expanded from New South Wales into the Queensland and South Australian markets. The company has crews already working weekends in NSW to deal with the increase in installations.
Four million Australian households (40 percent) have rooftop solar panels installed, with the number now adding a household battery steadily increasing as batteries become more affordable and energy companies slug ratepayers and business owners a so-called “sun-tax” for feeding back to the grid.
The latest World Energy Investment Report predicts the global market for residential batteries will increase by 25 percent a year in the next five years.Figures from the Climate Council show adding a 4kWh battery to a 5kW residential solar system can double the amount of self-generated solar electricity a household consumes from 30 percent to 60 percent, leading to the investment paying for itself within 3-7 years, depending on household energy usage, tariff plans and local electricity rates.
“Not only are we seeing a rapid increase in people installing a home battery but households are often opting for two batteries to retain more of the solar power they are generating during the day, to use at night and reducing reliance on the grid with many of our clients no longer paying an electricity bill at all.
A typical 10kWh home battery system can power a 1kW appliance for 10 hours, meaning it can keep essential devices like lights, WiFi, and a fridge running comfortably through the night or during a power outage.
The battery itself is about the size of a medium filing cabinet which is fitted to the side of a home or in the garage.
As energy conservation increases, energy-efficient homes are also becoming more desirable in the real estate market.
“We also know energy-efficient homes, or “green homes” can often sell for a premium compared to traditional homes due to the lower operating costs.
“Homes with energy-efficient upgrades, especially those with solar and home battery systems are more likely to attract buyers and can garner up to five percent more than similar homes without those features because of the significant electricity savings,” Mr Sedighi said.
