RICERCAR | ‘Magestic and meditative’

Theatre Works again is a hive of activity as we end the year withPresent Tense‘s remarkable RICERCAR and things heat up for 2016.

What an incredible and ambitious production RICERCAR has been to end the year on. Audiences have been moved by this majestic operatic event bringing together 4 muscians, a soprano, a tenor and 6 performers. Having just increased seating for the final three shows, we urge you to experience RICERCAR before theseason ends this Saturday.

Last week, at an exclusive Bridge Donor event, we were delighted to launch our Plus1 fundraising campaign supported byCreative Partnerships Australia. This means, every donation you make, before May 2016, will be matched – dollar for dollar! Your donation will support our Foundation Funding Appeal. Click here for details.

So, what’s in store for 2016? We’re bringing you two international artists on tour – legendary US performance artistPenny Arcade and London’s enfant terrible Scottee returns, plus our biggest ever Festival of Live Art program and a new model increasing the support of local independent artists. But you’ll have to wait until early in the new year to get all the details.

Hope you’re all doing well in the lead up to the silly season and we look forward to seeing you at RICERCAR.

What the audiences say on RICERCAR

‘RICERCAR at Theatre Works is a must-see: at once raw and exquisite, austere and overwhelmingly sensual. Plus the enduring modernity of Bach’
– Alison Croggon

‘Nathan Gilkes and Bryce Ives would have us believe the origin of the Western musical universe can be found in Bach’s transfiguration and in RICERCAR at Theatre Works in Melbourne they prove it’
– Chris Boyd, THE AUSTRALIAN

The music unfurls as a kind of requiem… it’s alternately majestic and meditative… the piece swells into a gorgeous operatic finale, with mirage like lighting from Richard Vabre’
– Cameron Woodhead THE AGE

‘So Melbourne: do take yourself to see RICERCAR. It’s a stunning work; and if you’re like me excitingly outside your normal wheelhouse’
– Jane Howard

Edinburgh’s double award winning show from New York’s undisputed queen of the underground is an exuberant performance anthem and passionate rumination on love, longing and loss.

Penny Arcade is one of a handful of artists who created performance art as we know it today. In 1967 she debuted with John Vaccaro’s explosive Playhouse of the Ridiculous and in 1969 became an Andy Warhol Factory Superstar. A contemporary of Patti Smith and Debbie Harry, Quentin Crisp named Penny Arcade as his soul mate and the woman he most identified with.

Arcade last toured Australia with her internationally acclaimed sex and censorship show Bitch! Dyke! Faghag! Whore!
