“We may be rooted in wheelchairs, but our vision grows gardens of hope. True sustainability begins when the most excluded are empowered to lead—from the soil up.”
— Prof. Dr. Billy Tang Chee Seng FRSA
What began as one man’s journey of resilience from a wheelchair has blossomed into a global movement for inclusive, regenerative agriculture.
PWD Smart FarmAbility is Malaysia’s first disability-led social franchise in regenerative farming. As someone who became a paraplegic in 2015, I faced many challenges—but through nature, I found healing and purpose. Today, we are empowering hundreds of Persons with Disabilities (PWD), youth-at-risk, and underserved communities across Asia to grow food, dignity, and financial independence—one harvest at a time.
From our signature Eco-HOPE Box Terrariums to our award-winning Soil-U-tion Aquaponics Satellite Farm, we create solutions that work in urban flats, schoolyards, rooftops, welfare centers, aging communities and even disaster zones. This isn’t just about vegetables. It’s about regenerating life—soil, people, and communities—through climate-smart, zero-waste farming.
Our model has been featured across three continents and supported by leading global institutions such as:
– Worldwide People With Disabilities (UK)
– UN-accredited World Humanitarian Drive (UK)
– Think Plus Academy’s P5 Sustainability Framework
– Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia (Innovation Foundation of Malaysia)
– Wilmington Metropolitan University USA (Malaysia Chapter)
Most recently, I had the honour of speaking at ReSkills OnStage and the 1st & 2nd Asia Pacific Sustainability Conference, highlighting how disability inclusion, regenerative food systems, and community-based education can together lead a green, just transition.
We are not asking for charity—we are creating circular economies led by those once left out of the system.
Let this be a call to action: Sustainability is not sustainable without inclusion.
I welcome future collaborations with our friends in Australia and the Pacific, and would be grateful to connect with like-minded institutions, educators, and grassroots changemakers.
Together, let’s root sustainability in purpose, equity, and hope.
