Stockland is again partnering with The National Theatre for Children (NTC) for the 2025 Big Battery Rescue School Challenge—a nationwide initiative aimed at educating and inspiring students about the importance of battery recycling and its environmental impact.

Launching in March 2025, the program will run until December, reaching 23 schools and over 16,000 students across 21 of Stockland’s masterplanned communities in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia.

Since 2020, the program has engaged over 80,000 students and 2,000 teachers and has diverted more than 25,000 kilograms of batteries from landfill.

Stockland Sustainability Manager, Penny Barker, said the initiative highlights Stockland’s commitment to creating social value and fostering sustainable communities.
“We’re committed to delivering social, economic, and environmental benefits for local communities through purposeful investment and collaboration. Programs like the Big Battery Rescue with NTC enables us to better educate our local communities and families about the importance of battery recycling through a fun and engaging program,” Ms Barker said. “It’s been great to see children so involved in the challenge over the past few years and we look forward to continuing our work with NTC to see what we can achieve with local schools again this year.”

“Across Australia, only 12% of used batteries are recycled,” says Tobias Benn, Managing Director at NTC. “Through interactive theatre, memorable characters, and engaging performances, we empower children and families to take real environmental action.”

Students will collect and recycle all types of batteries, helping reduce waste and prevent pollution. “By making sustainability fun and relatable, this program creates lasting habits and measurable community impact,” Tobias adds.

The program features live performances, hands-on activities, digital tools, printed workbooks, and teacher resources, along with a school-wide battery collection service. An online portal tracks progress, measures environmental impact, and provides educational resources.

Residents can also drop off used batteries at participating schools, expanding the program’s reach.
