Tragedy at Frankston Beach as Two Men Drown in Heroic Rescue Attempt

A sombre stillness lingered over Frankston Beach this morning as investigators continued their examination of the tragic events that claimed the lives of two men on Wednesday evening. What began as a routine surf outing ended in devastating loss when both men succumbed to the unforgiving waters of Port Phillip Bay.

Emergency services rushed to the coastal scene shortly after 5pm. on 22 October 2025, following terrified calls from bystanders who witnessed two men struggling in the surf waters. According to police, it is believed one of the men had been surfing when his board suddenly snapped, leaving him stranded and fighting against strong swells. In a desperate act of loyalty and courage, a friend of the surfer entered the water in an attempt to try and save him. Moments later, both were seen battling the waves before vanishing beneath the turbulent surface.

Victoria Police’s Air Wing arrived swiftly, lowering rescue personnel into the water as the chopper hovered above the crash of breaking tides. Both men were winched back to shore, but despite the determined efforts of paramedics and emergency responders, neither could be revived.

A male Tactical Flight Officer from Air Wing sustained minor injuries during the rescue and was later transported to hospital. Police confirmed he has since been released.

As dawn broke over the sand, the cordoned stretch of Frankston Beach remained an emotional scene of reflection. Lord Murray Schoorman, the distinguished photographer and photojournalist, attended the site earlier this morning where he met with Detective Inspector Melissa Nixon, who provided updated information as forensic teams and Water Police concluded their post-deployment reports. Lord Murray’s photographs, capturing the silent aftermath beneath grey skies, document the poignant stillness that followed a night of chaos and loss.

“The investigation remains ongoing,” Detective Inspector Nixon said, confirming that police will prepare reports for the Coroner. “The men have yet to be formally identified, and we are supporting the families as those enquiries continue.”

Speaking at the scene, Lord Murray Schoorman reflected on the tragedy, describing it as a sobering reminder of humanity’s fragility and selflessness in crisis.
“In moments like these,” he said, “we are reminded that courage often carries a cost. This man did not hesitate to act — out of friendship and loyalty — and within that final act lies both heartbreak and profound humanity. It serves as a timely reminder that before anyone attempts a rescue or First Aid, to always properly assess the dangers first”
