UNSW brings energy leaders together to fast-track Australia’s net zero future

Australia’s energy sector is at a crossroads, with rising demand, growing complexity and new opportunities for reform. We are in a race to net zero, but it feels like we are falling behind.

Even with a legislated net-zero target for 2050, Australia still lacks some of the essential technologies, policy support, and public momentum needed to drive the transition at the pace required.

This week, industry experts will gather at UNSW Sydney for the 2025 State of Energy Research Conference (SoERC). Over three days, the Conference will focus on energy market reform, society and institutions, and scaling up clean technologies like smart grids, hydrogen, solar and energy storage.

CEO of the UNSW Energy Institute and Chair of the Energy Research Institutes Council for Australia, Dani Alexander, said the event would be vital in shaping the future of Australia’s clean energy transition.

“The Conference is an opportunity at this crucial nexus to share the latest research, build connections across sectors and align efforts for real impact,” Ms Alexander said.

“UNSW is proud to host the conversation and the collaboration that will help accelerate solutions at the scale and speed the transition demands.”

Organised by the Energy Research Institutes Council for Australia (ERICA), the Conference will feature keynote speakers from experts working at the forefront of the energy transition, including Climate Change Authority Chair Matt Kean.
