Chapel Off Chapel – June 21-25

Clad in uniforms of black and leopard print paired with white low-top sneakers, Bec Moore, Laura “Burzie” Burzacott, Dani O’Malley and Jane Patterson of Ginger and Tonic talk love, inspiration and business in their cabaret For Love or Money. Their a capella harmonies are tight, their dance moves are slick, and their beats are sick.

Commanding the stage like an ocker Sporty Spice meets Eminem, Burzie spits fire in a thick bogan accent. Her beat-boxing and synth impression are equal parts impressive and hilarious.

While Burzie defers to her hero Gina Rinehart for inspiration, Jane offers advice from her hero Oprah, although it’s more often nonsensical than sage.

From Meatloaf to Meghan Trainor, For Love or Money intersperses original music with parody covers, replacing lyrics with business plan. Burzie’s burgeoning Trivial Weddings, Bec’s innovative bedroom-ready activewear, Jane’s libido cure and Dani’s “insurance” for the modern woman are all cleverly integrated into these witty and often risqué a capella songs.

Although there are some weak points – Bec slips between Aussie and American accents while singing, which is mildly distracting – For Love or Money is a fantastic show with strong vocals, sex jokes, and gyration that would make Elvis proud.
