Cockfight

A cross between The Office and a cage fight

Two blokes square off in an office. It’s hypermasculine, it’s dangerous, it’s white male violence where phones and whiteboards and words are weapons. It’s pointless, it’s painful, and it leaves the participants both the worse for wear. The male ego, so keen for stoking, lies battered and broken on the floor. Who dares wins…til they don’t. From the Helpman Award winning company The Farm comes a show that is raw and honest. Following a sold out performances at Dance Massive last year, Gasworks Arts Park is excited to host 3 performance of Cockfight from 6-8 September at 7.30pm

Cockfight 6-8 SeptemberCockfight explores the power play between men, the frailty of the ageing body and questions our culture’s desperate struggle for achievement. This innovative work from Gold Coast based company The Farm  cuts through questions about how dance and theatre can be integrated and connects to audiences of many levels. .

At the heart of Cockfight is the relationship between Gavin and Josh. They met as teacher and student, worked together for more than 10 years and now are both co-artistic directors of different companies.

Cockfight sets their relationship within a stark office environment and explores a power play both dramatic and complex. Within the show, the tangible theatre and the fictional office set are used by the performers to compete and play out the cockfight, exploring office politics and the ingrained fear of the older being surpassed by the younger.

Cockfight 6-8 September“In the making of this show we broke a lot of props. On the side of our rehearsal space was a graveyard of steres, phones, chairs and lamps…and cut-up neckties. What stayed intact was our working relationships” Joshua Thomson

“We started with the simple idea of a power play and the moment in time when the power shifts. That moment holds everything, like a prism fracturing light. On the other side of it are redundancy, triumph, despair, compassion, disgust, comedy. On and on.” Gavin Webber.
