The best of urban design and innovation in Port Phillip was recognised last night as winners of Council’s Design & Development Awards 2020 were announced via a digital ceremony, after the March presentation was delayed due to COVID-19.

Judged by industry stalwarts, Shelley Penn, Monique Woodward and James Legge, together with Mayor Bernadene Voss, Cr David Brand and Cr Dick Gross, the biennial awards encourage excellence in urban design, architecture, heritage, public space, sustainability, interior architecture and urban art in Port Phillip.

The Albert Park Curved Pleated Façade by AdeB Architects, which features a detailed curved pebble-shaped form floating behind the original heritage roof designed to evoke the mottled Australian landscape, and the Council-supported redevelopment of South Melbourne Life Saving Club, which combined elemental elegance with exceptional sustainability credentials, were among winning entries.

Mayor Bernadene Voss said Port Phillip’s Design & Development Awards contributed to the
atmosphere, style and liveability of the City.

“Port Phillip is the place where design, innovation and heritage meet to form the backdrop of our City. The entrants to the Design & Development Awards 2020 all demonstrated a vision and commitment to design excellence in Port Phillip. As we move toward our COVID-19 recovery phase, we will need your creativity and ideas more than ever,” Cr Voss said.

“Once again, the Design & Development Awards attracted a high standard of entrants.

Congratulations to category winners and commended projects.”
