Lindfield mum Kylie Rosenbaum has now halved her power bill to $600 a quarter by installing a solar battery, with enough power to run their home during the peak and charge their electric cars at night.
Australians looking for energy savings can now access a rebate on their household battery storage months early through leading provider VoltX Energy, as the rising cost of living sees people searching for ways to make every dollar go further.
Beginning November 1, the NSW government will offer rebates from $1600 based on battery size, for systems ranging from 2 to 28 kilowatt-hours capacity, with some households and businesses delaying their purchase until then.
VoltX Energy says people shouldn’t have to wait, offering the rebate to its customers up front, months ahead of the government incentive kicking in, with a warning those who delay could come up against a backlog of installations stretching to April next year, due to a shortage of electricians and installers in the industry and the sheer number of households expected to take up the rebate offer.
“Those who wait for the NSW government rebate in November could face a backlog of installations, due to the forecast overwhelming surge in demand, so we are offering the rebate now so people can avoid any delay and start benefiting and saving immediately,” warned David Sedighi, Voltx Energy Chief Operating Officer.
3.2 million Australian households (32 percent) have rooftop solar panels installed, 885,000 in NSW alone, but just two percent across Australia have a household battery.
That number is expected to drastically spike, as batteries become more affordable and energy companies slug ratepayers and business owners a so-called “sun-tax”.
As of July, Ausgrid is charging customers an opt-in 1.2c/kWh tariff for rooftop solar exported to its network in the middle of the day (between 10am and 3pm), before it becomes mandatory for all customers in July 2025.
“Charging solar panel owners who send their excess electricity back to the grid during peak times is just another cost at a time when households can least afford it. Those who install a battery can maximise their savings, because they’ll be less reliant on the grid especially during peak times,” Mr Sedighi said.
“Battery storage is essential for Australia’s transition to renewable energy. It allows households to store excess solar power, reducing reliance on the grid and lowering carbon footprints. This is a critical step towards a sustainable future,” Mr Sedighi said.
The $1600 rebate will mean a VoltX Energy Battery will go from $7500 to $5900, including installation.
