The Museum of Inherited Memories and Festival of Jewish Art and Music (FOJAM) presents Uprising: Songs of Resistance, a concert inspired by Holocaust memorial honouring resistance to racism through song and story featuring Paul Kelly, Julia Stone, Deborah Conway, Kee’ahn and more
PAUL KELLY
Contemporary international arts and music festival FOJAM, is thrilled to announce the arrival of an exciting new concert conceived by The Museum of Inherited Memories, Uprising: Songs of Resistance, that will take place on Thursday 8 April at St Kilda’s Memo Music Hall in Melbourne and available to stream online globally.
Uprising: Songs of Resistance starts at the close of Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance and Heroism Day) and invites people from all ethnic and cultural backgrounds to celebrate resistance to racism through song and story.
Artists gather to remember the Holocaust and celebrate ongoing survival and activism against racism, fascism and antisemitism.
After taking their events online in 2020, the tiny cultural festival tripled its audiences through a series of dynamic online events. This year, FOJAM is back, and this time, they are bringing you online events with a live component whenever possible through a series of events that all fall under the 2021 theme of Revolution!
The festival is honoured to be presenting its first event of the year with Uprising: Songs of Resistance conceived by The Museum of Inherited Memories and curated by Siân Darling. The descendant of Holocaust survivors, Darling sees storytelling and song as a mighty tool for activism.
KEE’AHN
“Uprising asks artists to perform as resistance against racism, antisemitism and forms of bigotry. Activism often demands empathy as the catalyst for such demanding work. What better way to inspire empathy than through stories? What easier way to explore such painful subjects than through song? I’ve found myself in conversations about human rights where the rights of Jewish people in the face of antisemitism seem off the agenda. I want all people who object to bigotry to resist together, leaving no people behind. “ – Siân Darling, Museum of Inherited Memories.
Stories and songs of resistance will be shared live from the concert at Memo Music Hall and online by an impressive lineup of beloved performers; Djirri Djirri Dancers, Paul Kelly, Julia Stone, Deborah Conway, Harry Angus, Kee’ahn, Paul Grabowsky and Sophia Brous, Emily Lubitz, Shane Howard and Ernie Gruner, Jess Hitchcock, Maria Tumarkin, and Arnold Zable.
“We are absolutely thrilled to present The Museum of Inherited Memories’ Uprising: Songs of Resistance, as the first FOJAM event for 2021. Through Uprising we will come together to connect and share music, stories and poetry – reminding us of the things that we are willing to fight for and those that bring us together.” – Lior Albeck-Ripka, FOJAM Artistic Director
Uprising: Songs of Resistance will take place at St Kilda’s Memo Music Hall to a live audience and will be broadcast live and available online for 72 hours post the event, allowing fans from across the globe to take part in this intimate concert to commemorate, honour, reflect and resist. Tickets are on sale now and are sure to go quick, so don’t delay.
