The Music Product Stewardship Alliance unites 20 of Australia’s leading labels, distributors, manufacturers, and retailers to cut climate emissions and improve environmental outcomes
Green Music Australia is proud to launch the Music Product Stewardship Alliance – an initiative to improve the environmental impact of physical music products, such as vinyl and CDs, in Australia.
The groundbreaking alliance brings together leaders across the recorded music industry including: ABC Music, AIR, Artist First, GizzVerse, Holiday Records, Impressed Recordings, In Hearts Wake, JB Hifi, Mushroom Group, Remote Control Records, PIAS / Inertia, Program Records, Rocket Distribution, Sony Music Entertainment, Suitcase Records, The Orchard, UNIFIED Music Group, Universal Music Australia, Warner Music Australia, and Zenith Records.
Supported by the NSW Environment Protection Authority and the City of Sydney, the project will see Green Music Australia conduct research and facilitate roundtable discussions with industry leaders to identify collective issues and solutions.
The first roundtable was held in mid-April, where 33 people across 21 companies joined together in Sydney to discuss the environmental impact of the Australian physical market and opportunities to create positive change.
Using data and insights provided by alliance members, and combining it with the latest in research and technological advancements from around the world, Green Music Australia provided a state of play update on the environmental challenges of vinyl and CD manufacturing and distribution.
Berish Bilander, CEO of Green Music Australia says, “We are incredibly proud to launch this alliance today alongside industry leaders, embarking on the sector-wide mission to reduce the climate impact of physical recorded products.
We all love visiting our local record store and purchasing a copy of our favourite album. But many of us don’t realise how polluting some of the materials in manufacturing and distributing music products can be.
Environmentally friendly options exist, and there’s a growing appetite from the sector and artists to make the switch. With vinyl sales quadrupling in Australia over the last ten years, it is more important than ever that we collaborate on shared solutions. Crafting a planet-friendly product is often an imperfect journey. This alliance is here to steer a greener pathway towards making eco-albums the industry norm.”
Alexandra Geddes, Executive Director Programs and Innovation of NSW EPA says, “It’s fantastic that Green Music Australia is thinking innovatively about the lifetime impact of music products and what that means for the environment.
NSW is transitioning to a circular economy, and forward-thinking initiatives like these demonstrate how industry can help embrace those changes. We can still enjoy the products we love, with a better outcome for our environment.”
The Music Product Stewardship Alliance will research and investigate:
- The emissions and waste footprint of various vinyl and CD formats
- Impacts of freighting and shipping
- Packaging challenges and innovations
- Local manufacturing opportunities
- Emerging overseas and local solutions
- Challenges unique to the Australian market, including international manufacturing and air freighting impacts
The Music Product Stewardship Alliance will continue to research and investigate solutions ahead of the second round table set for July 2024. For more information, visit Green Music Australia.
