ILANEL celebrates a decade of visionary designs with a commissioned artistic canvas on their Melbourne studio by Chuck Mayfield
Visionary designs and a desire to collaborate with other inspiring creators caused a powerful and luminous stellar explosion, a supernova.
Having seen Chuck Mayfield’s work at the urban art exhibition, Can’t Do Tomorrow, held at the historic Younghusbands Building in Kensington, Ilan El, founding owner and Creative Director of ILANEL Design Studios knew he and Chuck had to work together.
Both Chuck and Ilan are Melbourne based, internationally exhibited, creative artisans. Both have unique understandings of how light interacts with the works they create and the audiences experiencing them. Yet both work in very different disciplines.
The opportunity to collaborate came early in 2020 when ILANEL celebrated their 10th anniversary. To commemorate the occasion ILANEL commissioned Chuck to reimagine the facade of their St Kilda Studio into a graphic glowing depiction of light and life.

The intricate artwork drew inspiration from the Art Deco movement – one of the studio’s most influential styles.
Thanks to Chuck’s mastery of paint, the north-east corner of the building radiates light as the sun rises. The visionary design continues to glow all day as the sun tracks over the sky, a brilliant depiction of ILANEL’s artistic ethos – good design breathing life into static spaces and creating an emotional connection between people and their ever evolving environment.
The north-west facade of the studio is guarded by Atlas, the Greek mythological father of many constellations, a source of great wisdom and founder of astronomy. Rather than holding up the world, in this interpretation Atlas braces the studio’s award-winning light, Supernova.
Chuck and Ilan created a time lapse video of the creation of this piece, set to become an iconic Melbourne work of Street Art.
