Hello,

This week, as our first preview audiences saw The Way Out, I’ve paused to reflect on its journey thus far.

I recalled the buzz among ensemble members over early drafts of Josephine’s sci-fi infused, Australian country-western drama. The detailed script development with Josephine, dramaturge Jane Bodie, and director Penny Harpham over several years. The weeks of rehearsal, the invaluable input of each of the actors’ and designers’ creativity and enquiry. The common ingredients? Collaborative spirit, excitement and rigorous investigation from every person involved.

When a new play is first produced, it finally has the opportunity to enact its purpose; to invite audiences to question, reflect, empathise, wonder. We have arrived at that point.

We’ve been rewarded this week, as audiences responded with great enthusiasm. On more than one occasion I’ve seen standing ovations, I’ve overheard high school theatre students who are studying the production cluster outside the theatre, talking excitedly about the world of the play and the characters. And each night, The Way Out has grown, ready to open officially this Wednesday. Thank you to our preview audiences for playing a pivotal part in the discovery of this work.

Everyone else, we’ll see you soon!
