It’s almost Spring! Linden New Art has a new season of exhibitions and activities to inspire, inform and educate. We have art classes for both children and adults and a Melbourne Chamber Orchestra performance.
CURRENT EXHIBITION > DUPLIKATOR
> CONTINUES UNTIL 9 OCTOBER 2016
In Duplikator we find Samuel Tupou’s signature use of vivid colours, pop sensibility, and street art techniques combined with patterns inspired by Ngatu designs. Adapting printmaking techniques such as silkscreen and printing onto layers of Perspex and PVC cut into shapes, his works are multi-layered both in appearance and cultural context.

CURRENT EXHIBITION > LAGANGU (From the Islands)
> CONTINUES UNTIL 9 OCTOBER 2016
Lagangu (From the Islands) features new work by one of the Torres Strait Islands’ most dynamic artists. Alick Tipoti presents a selection of lino-prints and paintings that reflect his culture and depict meaningful symbols about the land, sea and sky through customary Torres Strait Island patterns. Born and raised on Badu Island (Queensland), home to the biggest community in the outer Torres Strait, Tipoti was taught carving techniques by uncles from an early age. His involvement in making traditional dance costumes and dancing apparatus as a child led to his interest in creating art today. Tipoti is also one of the few remaining people today who can speak the Torres Strait Island language of Kala Lagaw Ya fluently, another influence leading to the preservation of his culture and art practice.
ALICK TIPOTI VISITS MELBOURNE
> FROM BADU ISLAND
Linden New Art was delighted to welcome Alick Tipoti to Melbourne for the opening of his solo exhibition LAGANGU (From the Islands). Braving the cold Melbourne winter, Alick had a busy time with the installation of his exhibition alongside numerous public programs, including our regular In Conversation Dinner at Circa and the Artist Insight floor talk at the National Gallery of Victoria in front of his series of masks on display as part of the Art of the Pacific exhibition. Alick commented on what a privilege it was to have talked in front of them. Alick’s time in Melbourne also allowed him to visit the collection of Torres Strait Islander art and artefacts held by Museum Victoria, an extraordinary and inspiring opportunity. One in which Alick highlighted as key in developing future work. “I think the trip to visit the masks was definite a spiritual one, a highlight from a cultural perspective. The mask I visited was the very first mask that inspired my fibreglass work in term of making masks.” Linden New Art would like to thank Judith Ryan and the Public Programs team at the National Gallery of Victoria and Lindy Allen at Melbourne Museum for providing Alick with these opportunities.
