Welcome to Listen To Older Voices, a program produced by Rob Greaves for Wesley Mission Victoria and podcast through the Toorak Times.
Listen To Older Voices presents the stories, views and opinions of our older citizens. It is predominantly in a life & times format, with interviewees reflecting upon their lives from earliest memories. An underlying principal of the program is to promote the concept of positive ageing, reinforcing the principle that older people have & continue to make a valuable contribution to both their local & wider community.
In part 2 of the story of 85 year old Marie Ainger, we learn about the trip to Australia Marie made when she followed Ken, who had recently proposed to her while living in London. We learn the reason why he left her in that city, but waited for her in Australia. We also begin to learn about Ken, who during part 2, joins in the discussions.
Marie’s recollections of this early period of her time in Australia are quite amazing and she openly shares her memories and her feelings, such as the agony of leaving her mother behind in London when she moves to Australia. She takes us with her as she relives her quite amazing working life in her new country and we begin to understand why she and Ken saw Australia as their new home and why Australia was so desirable for migrants from the UK.
