Welcome to the second of a 3-part program on the life and times of 76 year old Stan Azzopardi. We learn more about his group, the Premiers, and the fact that there were two versions, the first in the late 1950’s, and the second in the late 1960’s.
Stan talks about Betty McQuade, who fronted the Premiers and who would go on to have a monster hit in the 1960’s with a cover of John D. Loudermilk’s track, Midnight Bus in 1961. Stan goes on to talk about how he established a career in recording, even while continuing on being an active musician both in groups and in duo’s.
His story of his meeting with legendary Melbourne DJ, Stan (The Man) Rolf is wonderful. Stan Azzopardi reminds us of how Stan ruled the airwaves in the 1950’s, ‘60’s and into the 70’s and how he was responsible for helping in developing and promoting the careers of many talented Australian artists. It makes for fascinating listening.
We also learn of how he met and married Mary, who would become his life-long partner, in a marriage that has lasted many decades and is still as strong as ever, today.
