> KATE GOLDING
Linden Postcard Show 2016 Award winner Kate Golding is a Melbourne based artist who uses photographic processes to examine colonisation and the representation of people and place. Currently undertaking a Master of Fine Arts by Research degree at the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne, her research project focuses on First Nation sovereignty, the memorialisation of Captain Cook and the study of counter-monuments.
Kate’s winning work, Unlearning Cook, Part One forms a part of her ongoing enquiry into the memorialisation of Captain Cook and his voyages. The work, which features a monument to Captain Cook in Whitby, England, was created from a “destructive intervention” to the original photographic negative with the intention that the visual information removed could never be returned. Kate then made a positive print from the damaged negative, resulting in the work Unlearning Cook, Part Two.
Kate says that in making these works, she wished to ‘unlearn’ Eurocentric histories in order to create space for First Nation narratives and truths. Through her research, she wishes to create a more nuanced understanding of Australia’s history and colonisation, while reflecting critically on her own Anglo heritage.
Kate says that she is “speechless” about winning the Linden Postcard Show 2016 Award and that “it absolutely made my year.” She loves Linden’s support of the arts through the Linden Postcard Show, as well as the variety of work and the democratic nature of the show – absolutely anyone can have their work shown in the gallery.
Kate finishes by saying “I really want to congratulate all who entered the show and encourage people to support these artists by purchasing their artworks.”
> CAROLINE CROW SALMON
Caroline Crow Salmon is an artist and teacher from the beautiful seaside town of Jurien Bay in Western Australia. She studied Conceptual art at university and enjoys making artworks that have a message or an idea.
Caroline has entered the Postcard Show before and says that she will be entering again next year. She enjoys the challenge that the small format offers the artist to create their work with the most visual efficiency. She also likes that small works can be created quite quickly.
Her work in this year’s show FIFO DIDO SOLO comments on the experience of people involved in the mining industry who fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) or drive-in-drive-out (DIDO) to work long stints away from their families and loved ones.
FIFO DIDO SOLO depicts a double bed surrounded by a somber black background. Rumpled sheets on only one side of the bed tellingly reveal the absence of the sleeper’s partner on the un-touched other side.
Painting from her personal experience, Caroline’s work subtly communicates the loneliness that can result from the lack of regular connection between the people at home and the FIFO/DIDO worker.
Melbourne artist Sarah Bell has a printmaking background. She has submitted two evocative photographs to the 2016-17 Linden Postcard Show. Sarah has earned the title of Linden Alumni, as not only has she exhibited in the Linden Postcard Show several times, but her first solo exhibition was at Linden in 1990!
Sarah decided to enter the 2016-17 Linden Postcard Show after setting a personal challenge with some of her creative colleagues. Having not exhibited for a while, Sarah found that the Linden Postcard Show was a really fun and accessible way to get some new work out on display.
Sarah’s current work explores dreamlike impressions of the natural world and references the ecological and climatic fragility of the environment. For her works in the 2016-17 Linden Postcard Show, Sarah used a slow shutter technique to achieve a soft, painterly feel. The images are printed on archival rag paper, giving them a beautiful depth and richness of colour.
Sarah loves the Linden Postcard Show because it has something for everyone. She also feels that the fact that the show is open throughout summer really gives exhibiting artists some good exposure.
You can view more of Sarah’s work at her website www.sarah-bell-artist.com and at her upcoming exhibition at Kingston Arts G3 Artspace in Moorabbin from 22 February 2017!
> ZOE ALEXIADES
Zoe Alexiades is a young Melbourne-based graphic artist. She has a keen interest in art, design, architecture, photography and interior spaces.
The 2016-17 Linden Postcard Show is the first exhibition that Zoe has ever exhibited in! She has submitted three laser-cut plywood designs. These fascinating works have an equally fascinating creation process. Zoe first creates her designs digitally in order to ensure that the laser cuts, etches and engraves the wood to her specific requirements.
Zoe performed multiple tests of this technique on paper and card, but ultimately chose plywood as her final material, as she enjoyed the random patterns produced by the wood grain and knots present in the source material.
Zoe loves the Linden Postcard Show because of the variety and range of artist, mediums, methods and materials on display. She loves that Linden provides a forum in which artists, designers and photographers can come together to exhibit their work.
Sydney-based art lover Leigh Johns attended his first Linden Postcard Show in 2008. He enjoys the show because it is both accessible to novice and seasoned art audiences and affordable for buyers. He also likes the wide range of works on display; artworks by children are hung alongside artworks by professional artists. Leigh loves the community feel that this aspect of the show creates.
Some of Leigh’s favourite Postcard Show artworks that he has collected to date are two abstract works by David Sackville. These works hang in his office above another painting he commissioned from St Kilda artist Chris Beaumont. Chris is also a regular entrant in the Postcard Show. Leigh also loves a study he purchased of the Australian media personality John Safran painted by Yvette Coppersmith. Coppersmith went on to be a finalist in the Archibald Prize in 2009 with a painting of Safran.
Leigh recommends the Postcard Show to other art lovers because the smaller size of the works are perfect for enlivening odd spaces around the home and office that would otherwise remain blank.
This year Leigh bought a work by Linden Postcard Show 2015 Award winner Robert Fenton.
> PATRICK FRANCIS
Patrick Francis is a young emerging artist who enjoys expressing himself using bold colours. He particularly likes to paint portraits of his idols.
This is Patrick’s first time in the Linden Postcard Show. He decided to enter the 2016-17 Linden Postcard Show because he felt that this work was showing improvement and he wished be exhibit amongst the wide variety of talented individuals that the show features.
He has submitted three acrylic paintings to the show, including Emperor Charles V (after Peter Paul Rubens), King Philip IV of Spain (after Diego Velaquez) and Untitled (Hillary Clinton in a Beanie). When painting these portraits, Patrick attempts to capture the essence of his subjects stripped of social and political implications by simplifying his subjects through the use of strong expressive colours.
Patrick loves the Linden Postcard Show because it presents a huge range of artistic styles and is a wonderful learning opportunity for emerging artists.
Arts Access Victoria artist Ed Treloar popped in the other day to put a few finishing touches on his delightful and expressive bird-themed paintings.
Ed’s works focus on the birds themselves and his minimalist use of line and colour really capture the freedom and movement of his subjects!
> JACK BULL
British artist Jack Bull has spent the past year travelling around Australia, creating artwork inspired by his surroundings. He featured in the 2016 National Trust Australia (NSW) Artists at Work event.
Jack is pleased to be exhibiting for the first time in the Linden Postcard Show. He has submitted photographs that depict some of the paintings that he has created during his travels around Australia. In a traditional postcard style, Jack’s works give us a view from the perspective of a travelling artist experiencing Australia.
Jack likes the way that this large and varied exhibition is presented and says, “the works look like small windows into the individual artist’s worlds”.
One of Jack’s entries ‘Postcard From Australia 2’ is currently still available for purchase at Linden New Art!
