As summer heats up, Port Phillip Council is urging revellers to play their part in keeping the City clean and safe, especially on key public holidays including New Year’s Eve.
Port Phillip’s 11 kilometres of scenic foreshore attract hundreds of thousands of visitors every festive season, with parks and reserves also popular.
Larger crowds are anticipated this summer with fewer Victorians expected to travel interstate or overseas due to lingering uncertainty about COVID-19 pandemic travel restrictions.
Mayor Marcus Pearl said the City is ready for extra visitors, with Council’s summer management program in full swing.
The distinctive Local Laws buggy is being used for Council beach patrols and when Victoria Police members are at the foreshore for Operation Summersafe.
“We have organised extra public rubbish bins and collections and beach cleans and our Local Laws officers are assisting police as they enforce our alcohol bans, which carry a $200 fine,” Cr Pearl said.
“Ultimately, we will have a safe and successful summer when everyone plays their part, so we are urging beach-goers to respect our ‘back yard’ by following alcohol and glass bans and not littering,” he said.
A total alcohol ban runs from 8 pm 30 December until 12 pm 2 January. There are no Council managed or permitted events or fireworks on NYE.
The city-wide alcohol ban for Australia Day is from 8 pm 25 January until 12 pm 27 January.
The St Kilda Foreshore Alcohol ban (1 November-31 March) is already in force. Beach and
foreshore reserves (including Catani Gardens) from Langridge Street to Thackeray Street are included in that ban.
Alcohol restrictions on the St Kilda Foreshore now include all sealed and unopened containers.
Visitors and residents can still enjoy drinking responsibly on foreshore areas outside St Kilda, between 12 pm and 8 pm, except when bans apply across the City on key public holiday periods.
Glass, including bottles, is never permitted on the foreshore.
