Six outstanding arts organisations have been awarded Port Phillip Council grants to support their considerable cultural contributions to the City.
The successful Cultural Development Fund applicants are:
• Rawcus Theatre Company Inc – an award-winning ensemble of artists with and without disability
• The Torch – creative arts programs for Indigenous offenders and ex-offenders
• Australian Tapestry Workshop – an award-winning centre of excellence for hand-woven tapestries
• Red Stitch Actors Theatre – actor-led ensemble producing strong local and international theatre and developing new Australian work
• Phillip Adams BalletLab at Temperance Hall – the only contemporary dance organisation in the City of Port Phillip and
• Theatre Works – working from a St Kilda parish hall, this company plays a vital role in independent theatre.
Each organisation will receive $30,000 a year for three years under the new Fund created to streamline Council’s funding process for the arts and to align with the Council Plan and Art and Soul: Creative and Prosperous City Strategy endorsed by Council in June.
Mayor Dick Gross said the Fund’s six 2019-21 recipients had all demonstrated an impressive track record of delivering high quality arts programs in Port Phillip, providing significant cultural, social and economic benefits for the City and its diverse community.
“We are also delighted that access and inclusion are strong components of many of these organisations’ programs,” he said.
“Port Phillip is renowned as a cultural hub and we are looking forward to these dynamic arts organisations enhancing this reputation over the next three years with their thought-provoking and original compositions and art works.”
