Over the last two decades, Seraphim Trio, Helen Ayres (violin), Anna Goldsworthy (piano) and Tim Nankervis (cello), has remained steadfastly committed to chamber music – from building the contemporary repertoire, to developing new audiences and teaching the next generation of performers.
In June 2017 Seraphim Trio continues its celebration of the history of the piano trio journeying through time from the Viennese salon of Mozart and Beethoven, to the rich subjectivities of Brahms, the vivid folk imaginings of Dvorák and the colour and majesty of Ravel.
Seraphim Trio perform The Nationalists on Wednesday 5 July, 7pm and The Moderns on Friday 7 July at 7pm at the Melbourne Recital Centre.
The Trio celebrates The Nationalists with music by two great friends, Dvořák and Brahms. While Brahms remained loyal to German Classicism during a time of Romantic opulence, he recognized in his young Czech friend a kindred melodic inventiveness and gift for musical line. Brahms was also instrumental in the publication of Dvořák’s ‘Dumky’ Trio, one of the most beloved trios of this era.
In The Moderns program, the Trio explores the 20th-century piano trio with Peter Sculthorpe’s Irkanda III and other music of the moderns, Ravel and Shostakovich. Ravel’s Trio remains, even today, a wondrous modern incantation of sound and texture while Shostakovich’s Trio, whether it is heard as an elegy at the loss of a friend or a whole nation in the midst of war, remains painfully relevant in our century. Sculthorpe’s glittering Irkanda III propels the genre to a bright and hopeful future.

BRAHMS Piano Trio in B, Op.8 DVOŘÁK Piano Trio No.4 in E minor, Op.90 Dumky
The program for The Moderns on Friday 7 July 7pm includes:
