Linden New Art’s stunning building was completed in the late 1850s. 166 years on she is in need of a facelift, because grand old dames deserve to look their best at all times! We are delighted to announce that our well loved home in St Kilda will be receiving some much-needed TLC in 2017 thanks to a significant investment by the City of Port Phillip.
For thirty years Linden New Art has presented new and sometimes challenging work by many of Australia’s leading contemporary artists. We are proud of the significant impact we have had on the careers of many artists: internationally renowned Penny Byrne took her first steps towards an art career in the Linden Postcard Show; Dr Debbie Symons has had work exhibited in Paris and New York following her inclusion in the first Linden Art Prize and Linden Projects: Atmosphere. These are just two examples of the many artists who have shown at Linden and gone on to develop their practice and careers as professional artists. Many others have had the opportunity to extend their practice such as notable Indigenous artist Daniel Walbidi who shifted his painting practice to create a large salt installation on the gallery floors and Sydney sculptor Alex Seton whose work explored the current asylum seeker debate with the inclusion of a soundscape.

IN 2017 WE ARE ON THE MOVE
Linden’s next step is an exciting one. In early 2017, whilst the renovations take place we will be relocating to Domain House (the former home of the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art). Situated near the entrance to the Royal Botanic Gardens in South Yarra, the gallery will be in close proximity to some of Melbourne’s iconic visitor attractions.
While we are sad to be temporarily leaving our Acland Street home, we are excited by the prospect of introducing new audiences to Linden and bringing them back with us when we return to St Kilda with the popular Linden Postcard Show in late 2017.

While at Domain House we will present solo exhibitions by Sam Leach, Kylie Stillman and the Tjanpi Desert Weavers. These exhibitions will inspire a range of opportunities for the community to learn and engage with contemporary art, including our Meet the Artist talks, In Conversation dinners, creative art making Crafternoons workshops and On Holidays workshops for school aged children.
