Far from a Greek tragedy, SPARC Theatre’s latest production is a lively reimagining of an ancient comedy interspersed with reflections of what it’s like living in supported modern day accommodation as a member of the Greek community.
A third of SPARC’s diverse company identify as having Greek heritage, adding to the power and authenticity of The Greek Mythological Boat Show.
All of the15 performers have experience of long-term psychiatric disability and/or acquired brain impairment and many live in supported accommodation in Port Phillip.
Mayor Dick Gross said Port Phillip Council is proud to have supported SPARC Theatre since its inception in 2004. Council provides $30,000 annually as part of its Access Arts Development programming.
“SPARC Theatre productions are known and loved for their creativity, unpredictability and moving performances,” Cr Gross said.
“The Greek Mythological Boat Show is no different and I’m sure audiences will be intrigued and challenged by the question it poses – if you had to leave home, what would you take with you? And what is left behind?”
The latest production reimagines the ancient Greek comedy The Birds and features an energetic soundtrack inspired by the 80s and 90s, including a rendition of Mama Mia in Greek.
Artistic director Katie Lockett said SPARC provides an opportunity for people with disability to transcend barriers they may face to fully participating in the arts and the community.
“Many in SPARC have little or no access to social or cultural participation due to illness and social isolation. SPARC is a unique theatre activity which bridges the gap for some of Port Phillip’s most marginalised members of the community,” she said.
SPARC is also supported by a partnership with the Port Phillip Community Group and this production has received a grant from the Besen Family Foundation.
The Greek Mythological Boat Show will be performed at Christ Church, 14 Acland Street, St Kilda on February 21, 22 and 23. The February 22 show will be Auslan interpreted. Details and bookings: https://www.trybooking.com/BADGJ (Tickets $20; concession $10)
