‘Sweet Phoebe’ by Michael Gow

22 to 25 March 2017

An Australian dark comedy about a marriage in chaos when a dog runs away, this quirky one hour love romp is staged in a 1920’s home.

Sweet Phoebe is a hilarious snapshot of a marriage laid bare when a dog the couple are minding disappears. A funny and poignant analysis of relationships, and what happens when people let their guard down.  Control descends to chaos as they begin to learn what love really means and how it feels. Featuring actors Linda Cookson & Anthony Bradshaw and directed by psychologist Meredith Fuller, it is intimately staged in a cosy setting punctuated with song, and a cameo appearance by ‘Phoebe’ the rottweiler.

In Sweet Phoebe, we follow a couple’s relationship in their frantic search for a dog who runs away. Over short scenes each day for a fortnight we follow the places they go and the people they encounter as they look for the lost Rottweiler.  It is part dark character comedy, part betrayal, part redemption, part joy and all entertainment.

The action takes place in a Melbourne house where we first meet Helen and Frazer, a busy career couple.  Frazer is worried about winning a work tender at the marketing firm and Helen is working on her first interior design assignment with clients who don’t share her minimalist vision. Being logical and organised isn’t helping Frazer’s struggle to connect. Helen’s brittle helpfulness barely disguises her anxiety, and their structured lives start melting as their hearts are pierced by the dog and the healing begins. Transformed by love, there are unexpected happy endings for all. Originally staged at the STC with Cate Blanchett as ‘Helen’, this fast paced dialogue also highlights Melbourne suburbs and Aussie archetypes we can all recognise.

With a limited run of 4 nights intimately seating only 35, book now so you don’t miss out.
