STREAMING NOT SCREAMING

By popular demand Gleeso & Crafty are back for a limited run of shows, one special Sunday every month

Dave Gleeson, lead singer of both The Angels and The Screaming Jets, and his great mate Crafty the Music Man broadcast live every week for 31 weeks straight.  Episode One started in the back yard of Dave’s wife Katie’s parents’ rural property, filmed sideways on Katie’s iPhone.  31 weeks later, the ‘finale’ was an absolute epic show of almost 3 1/2 hours.  Now the guys are back with their first special show each month.  They joked about how far they’ve come but that nothing’s really changed, they’re still a backyard act.

These StreamingNotScreaming afternoons kept us sane during those first Covid months, streaming live out to Facebook land every Sunday for an hour.  I’m sure it also helped keep the musicians sane, after losing months and months of livelihood overnight, Covid hitting the entertainment industry pretty hard.

Soon they were streaming from their sponsors’ winery at Anderson Hill for a few shows and one episode was out of Dave’s local, The Scenic Hotel.

The first gig with an audience allowed only ten people, and as the months went by, the audiences grew as restrictions slowly eased.  Eventually they found a permanent home at one of Adelaide’s favorite music venues The Gov, cabaret seating, no standing or dancing and 1.5m rules, but we loved it!!  The live stream turned off after the first hour and then the boys broke loose, entertaining us for at least another hour after that.

According to Dave, “The Gov should be stuffed and mounted”.  They have certainly supported live music during the most difficult of years.

Some of the previous themes have been The Angels Special, Beer Drinkin’ Bangers, Chicks of Rock, School Daze, OzRock, Screaming Jets Week, Fathers’ Day, Hard ‘n Heavy ‘n Hair Special, Mothers Day, Sing-A-Long Songs, Tribute to Albert Productions, Road Trippin’ Special, Country Hour and the Finale was Songs Dave Knows.

Father of Five and I attended each week – our one outing to look forward to and a little break from the five children at home.  The number of familiar faces in the audience each week, showed many others were relying on it too.  The boys never disappointed.

There were some special live guests including The Brewster Brothers, John and Rick Brewster and Sam Brewster from The Angels, and some virtual guest appearances by the members of The Screaming Jets.

Quite often Dave’s son James took the stage to play drums for some songs and daughter Bella usually gave us a good laugh with the Joke of The Day.

Special merchandise was made available including face masks made from repurposed bandannas.

There were a few different members of the usual StreamingNotScreaming band – regulars Storky and Athol were both unavailable, but Matty McNamee was back behind drums, Jake on keys and Benny on bass.

Gleeso and Crafty began by reminiscing about Dave on the dole in the 80s, watching daytime TV.  They both know way too much about The Young & The Restless and Days Of Our Lives if you ask me!!

Dave on Facebook said, “In honour of StreamingNotScreaming’s return to The Gov, we’ll be ‘doing a John Farnham’. Our theme, a bunch of songs from old rockers that just can’t retire (even after they announce said retirement). Me old mate Farnsey, Cold Chisel, Kiss, Elvis, Garth Brooks, Crowded House … the list goes on. Could be a long show Rockers .. and it’ll be LIVE-STREAMED for FREE!!!! Just so ya know, ‘Doing a John Farnham’ has officially been declared by The Australian National University’s Oxford Press as an official Aussie slang term.  Referred to as a “noun: used allusively of a comeback or reappearance, especially after a final performance or retirement”.

Each show has had a theme, some looser than others.  The theme today, Comeback Bands.  Crafty had a loop of John Farnham’s ultimate comeback song ‘You’re The Voice” and cleverly played it, before other songs, during other songs and after other songs.

Dave told a story about playing cricket with Shane Lee and Greg The Yellow Wiggle where he had to borrow Michael Slaters underpants (worn superman style) because he was free-balling back in those days.  Crafty who literally has a song for every occasion and is quick and witty automatically begins a quick rendition of “Free Falling” by Tom Petty.

SET LIST

The last song of the encore alone was worth the admission.

These guys are clever, talented and funny …. if Dave wasn’t a rock n roll man, he could certainly make a good living as a comedian!

The theme of this month’s gig is Love Songs in honour of Valentine’s Day.

You absolutely must get to a show if you’re lucky enough to be in South Australia.

The rest of Australia – see you down the front on the stream!!
