The benefits of taking new Theatre out of the city to The Suburb pubs.
Benefits, people don’t have to deal with city traffic and or finding parking. They can also grab a meal in order to make a complete night of it.
The venues are far cheaper to hire so the theatre company can charge less for a ticket and yet with only moderate houses make more money than they would in a bigger more expensive venue.
As long as the piece is good customer loyalty should build quickly.
If the company is able to use try booking then they don’t have to be slugged with the ticket charge. Often major venues charge the customer a $6 t $7 dollar ticket charge and then they charge the company a $3 charge as well and neither the company nor the customer receives any benefit for this.
It’s a great way to give birth to new theatre for if it fails the artist is not left with a massive bill.
Artists can learn on the ground the art of show business, (rule one: entertain your audience).

The company can fine tune the piece night by night as they strive to see if it can become a touring product of entertainment.
Larger and more established theatre companies can benefit for not having to lay out development fees, or deal with funding bodies and committees instead they can come and peruse the company’s work and decide for themselves if the piece has the legs to take it to the next level. Their level.
The pubs, the artists, the public will benefit from the birth of a new culture. On quiet nights they can fill their venues with new faces, many of who will buy a meal and or a drink before heading to the function room to see the play. In the intermission they can sell more drinks then afterwards the customer can remain in the pub and meet the cast and or just socialize.

The suburbs are an untapped gold mine of customers. I understand it’s the dream of all theatre folk to be in a major theatre, but there is a great buzz to being a part of a play, which has been stripped down to its basic elements of story and great acting as it holds an audience. It’s raw, organic and offers the audience and experience hard to find elsewhere.
It’s also a way for actors and writers to make money week in week out from their art. Don’t believe it, then come to the Palace theatre on February 18 and watch the actors of Marooned perform their magic.
I would be there if you’d like to chat further.
