– the farm can produce new coral 50 times faster than it grows in the sea
– the team is making the coral stronger and more resilient to today’s climate
In its latest film, ‘Saving The Corals’, Great Big Story meets the team in Dubai that are not only restoring coral to our oceans, but also making it more resilient to climate change.
Since 1970, nearly 50% of the coral from the world’s oceans has already been lost due to factors such as pollution, climate change and overfarming. If something isn’t done to reverse the damage then around 90% of the coral could be lost by as soon as 2050.
This is where Ahmed Hamdy and his team at Coral Vita come in. At the first ever land-based coral farm they have been working on techniques that not only grow coral up to 50 times faster than it can grow naturally, but it’s also more resilient to climate change and the other factors that are currently destroying it.
This is the fourth film in the five-part series with the Museum of the Future that is showcasing how Dubai is at the forefront of technological advancement, as they work toward creating a better future for all humanity. The first film looked at how the Arabian Oryx has been saved from extinction, the second shows how robots are the future of takeaway deliveries in Dubai, and the third looked at whether vertical farming is the future of agriculture.
The Museum of the Future opened in 2022, but the idea first came to life in 2014. It was created to showcase how Dubai is working towards a more sustainable and optimistic future for all.
Great Big Story is an award-winning factual publisher that was launched in 2015 by CNN and relaunched in 2023 by Whynow Media. The social-first channel produces mini-docs on food, travel and tech for their 15 million followers worldwide, daily.
Ahmed Hamdy, Farm Operations Manager from Coral Vita said: “The destruction of the coral in our seas is a concern for many, but here at the Coral Vita it was a problem we wanted to solve. Using our coral farm we can simulate all the conditions of the sea in our tanks, but grow them faster and stronger than in the wild. By doing so we can replace more coral more quickly, and get our oceans back to how they were before.”
Azza Al Nuaimi, Head of Project Management at Museum of the Future said: “Our team loves working with like-minded organisations that prioritise sustainability. We like to take real world problems and find a solution, and the team at Coral Vita and their coral farming is a fantastic example of this. By creating a land-based farm, the team is creating stronger coral faster than ever before, and finding a solution to a worrying issue.”
The final film in the series will look at how AI is being used to create the most efficient solutions to everyday engineering issues.
