Twelve Nights by Katherine Kitchener

This book was a Kickstarter campaign. Shared by a friend who I know is reliable so I put my money down. Promptly forgot about it, I presume I must have answered the questions about postal address, but I don’t remember. It was a sheer pleasure to open the parcel and find this inside. It looks like it came before I started doing unboxing videos so I can’t link to a specific video. All I can say is I was very excited.

I’m partial to a little horror so I was very excited to read this book. I must have been very distracted by the writing as I’ve not made any notes while reading. There are twelve short stories in this little book. Each one is a little gem, and I’m very happy to keep this in my collection.

If I talk about each one I’d be doing you a disservice by giving spoilers. In order to stop spoilers about most of the text I’m only going to talk about the first story. It’s a little doozy!

The form is that of a letter to friends. One of those long updates some people send out before Christmas. It’s written in a gentle manner, I really felt she loved her family. Every family has their own challenges and we’re told about each person and their challenge. The mother has such a way with words. On the surface she seems to be managing with all the issues the family throws her way. Underneath I feel she’s had enough and is planning on a very special Christmas present for each one…a tombstone…with a date.

I’ve now read this short story twice and it gets better each time I read it. I’m very grateful to my friend for sharing the Kickstarter on his timeline. I also got some great inclusions in the packet which included a bookmark with his artwork, such talent.
