West Australian Music (WAM) and the State Library of WA (SLWA) are inviting WA based emerging and early-career sound artists and musicians to immerse themselves in the stories of WA’s past for a new sonic re-imagining of WA history – Corridors of Blissterday.

The commission project provides the unique opportunity for a WA sound practitioner to develop an innovative contemporary work referencing and incorporating SLWA’s historic West Australian Heritage Collections. Titled after the second studio album of renowned WA artist POND, Corridors of Blissterday seeks to inspire new ideas, and promote creative engagement with the State Library’s collections, as well as providing an opportunity for artists in the early stages of their career to develop their creative practice.

One artist or act will be selected following an open submission process, and will receive $5000 and access to the State Library collections in order to develop their work over six months. The final commission piece will be performed, exhibited or installed in the State Library as part of WAM’s WA Music Week (November 2022), and a recorded version of the work will be added to the State Library’s collections.

Margaret Allen, CEO & State Librarian commented “The State Library is pleased to partner with WAM again as part of their annual WA Music Week celebrations, and to be broadening the scope of our collaboration thanks to this innovative new initiative. Corridors of Blissterday presents an exciting opportunity for an emerging artist to deliver new work that connects to and draws from the diverse range of West Australian stories included in the State Library’s collections.”

Submissions for Corridors of Blissterday are now open to emerging and early career WA based creative practitioners who work with sound. Artists are encouraged to explore the State Library’s WA heritage collections either online via the SLWA catalogue or in the building.

Submissions close on Friday 22 April 2022 and can be made HERE
