West Australian Music (WAM) is honoured to unveil the debut singles from the upcoming Sounds of The Mid West regional recording compilation – Ngaalija Yangoogoo Yaanaa (Come Let’s Walk Together) from Theona Councillor and Creed and Colour from Alexia Parenzee. The compilation album, recorded on Yamatji country in Geraldton during September and October 2020, is WAM’s fourteenth regional recording compilation and the fourth release of nine new regional recording project albums supported through the State Government of West Australia’s Contemporary Music Fund.
The first single comes from Naaguja woman, Theona Councillor, an artist well known for her work with previous album releases, Diamond in the Rough (2001), Sweet Black Man (2007) and Cover Me (2013), plus multiple award nominations including a Deadly Award for Country Artist of The Year. After taking some time away to grow up her grandchildren and immerse herself in her Naaguja Wangga, Theona returns with ‘Ngaalija Yangoogoo Yaanaa’ (Come Let’s Walk Together) – a track penned with a sentiment of Australia becoming a united country, tolerant of new cultures and celebrating the uniqueness of our ancient Indigenous cultures.
The second single Creed and Colour sees the long-awaited recording debut of Alexia Parenzee. A well-known local performer and highly respected community music contributor, Alexia’s debut offering looks to her cultural heritage and diversity to honour her ancestors. The song took her on a personal journey of acknowledging their lives’ struggles and choosing to respectfully bring these truths and stories to the front.
The ten compilation acts will return to the stage on which Sounds of The Mid West was recorded for the official live launch at Geraldton’s Queens Park Theatre on Friday 16 April. The artists will perform live in what is slated to be a grand re-opening of the Mid West region’s premiere performance venue, thanks to our partnership with the City of Greater Geraldton. The local music festivity will be hosted by ABC Mid West and Wheatbelt Breakfast presenter Michelle Stanley, in what is set to be a historic evening celebrating the burgeoning talent that has been simmering in this region for the past few years. Tickets are now available at www.queensparktheatre.com.au.
With thanks to new program sponsor the Regional Men’s Health Initiative, patrons of this and future live launches will have the chance to get a ‘pit stop health check’, where physical and mental health check information and resources are offered, helping to keep our regional population aware of the importance of mental and physical maintenance.
Sounds of The Mid West will be launched via digital platforms on Friday 9 April 2021.
