Tonight I went to The Burrow, an art’s venue in Fitzroy to see “Where’s My Money”. This is a thoroughly independent theatre and in case I’m already boring you I’ll get to the gist. Go see it! It rocks! In fact, I’d go further. All I’ve been hearing for a while now is how new theatre is dead, well someone forgot to tell 7th floor, I’m not sure how but they performed as though they had sherbet in their blood.
Their acting was terrific and the direction was by Beng Oh was bang on. Their combined breathless pace demanded my concentration and rewarded it. If I wasn’t laughing, often out loud, I was momentarily stilled or uttering a few good gasps at some seriously nasty but delicious retorts and then over and above all the clever and challenging humour there were a few moments where we all jumped out of our seats. It was great fun.
The play itself is seriously well written so there is no point in criticizing that, and while I did start off wondering which actor I’d target as being particularly good, I have to say the margins aren’t worth the measure. Their passion to perform is pure theatre and as they did with me they will infect you.
If the company could tour this around the suburbs they’d all make money, for people would love it and the word would spread. I’m still grinning to some of the well-delivered savagely biting lines.
And while the venue might only hold 25 seats, all they take is twenty per cent of the door, so if you are a new company with a new play that you want to trial it is a perfect incubator.
So, in conclusion, I urge you to go see it, not only to support these artists, and I wish them all well, but simply because they are very good and worth more than the price of admission.
