Pipes forming part of a ventilation system that are used to regulate air throughout a building are called ducts, ductwork or ducting. A good example of a basic duct would be a fireplace chimney that draws smoke out of the house. However, hard pipes that are used in water and gas piping are not considered as ducting. Keeping in mind that ducting is of vital importance in the building’s overall utility, ductwork should be the first thing to consider when you design a new building as it requires complex duct routes and other important elements that you will have to integrate in your plan. It is also very important to know the different kind of ducting supplies available and when you need them.
-
Rigid Ducts
Ranging from cylindrical to rectangular forms, rigid ducts come in a myriad of shapes sizes and materials. Some common materials used in ducting supplies include,
-
Fiberglass: Commonly used in commercial buildings, these are sheet metal ducts that are lined externally or internally with fiberglass. Even though it is a preferred choice for its ability to lessen the sound emanating from the AC unit, it still isn’t a very effective one for the long term. Fiberglass deteriorates much faster than other ducting supplies and has a tendency of getting mold and bacteria contaminations which can be a major concern for people’s health.
-
Sheet metal: This is exactly the type of material that is made famous by the crawl spaces shown in the Bollywood spy movies. Sheet metals used for AC ducting supplies are primarily made of two kinds of metals, Aluminum, which is a more preferred choice for the ease they provide during their installation owing to its light weight, and Galvanized.
-
Duct board: Insulated with fiberglass, duct boards are the simplest form of material used in ducting supplies. With an outer covering of foil or fabric, duct boards are easily damaged and have a tendency of accumulating dust. However, owing to its good insulation features, it is preferred for its efficiency in cooling.
-
Polyurethane: Insulated with plastic, polyurethane is formed into strong panels lined with aluminum on both sides that are then shaped into ducts.
-
Flexible Ducts
Primarily used to attach ducts that are non-flexible like ducts made of sheet metal, Flexible ducts are usually surrounded with insulation and are covered with plastic that is bendable. The places that cannot be covered with rigid duct, can be easily covered with flexible ducts. Though a cheaper option than rigid ducts, flexible ducts are notorious for their tendency of leaking if the installation is not done properly by an expert.
Even though flexible ducts are cheaper than the rigid ducts, the later is much more durable and reliable in the long run. For a quick and easy installation however, flexible ducts would be your best bet.
The importance of having a good ductwork
Many reasons come to mind while thinking about why your home needs to have a good ductwork.
- Makes your home more comfortable: A good ducting ensures your home is always comfortable by ensuring that there is no uneven cooling anywhere.
- Saves energy: A good ductwork saves your money by ensuring there are no air losses that can make your AC work overtime to accommodate which results in an increase in your electricity bill.
- Improving the air quality: In your home, Good ductwork makes sure that air from outside of your home can never enter your home by ensuring there are no leaks or cracks in the ducts. This keeps your home safe from harmful air and particles that emanate from other building
The ductwork in your home is one of the most vital aspects of designing of a healthy home. Give extra care in choosing your ducting supplies as they can set the tone for the quality of life you spend in your home.
