THE LIVING END FRONTMAN SHARES THE VIDEO FOR HIS LATEST SINGLE ‘CORNER SHOP’
ANNOUNCES AUSTRALIA-WIDE TOUR FOR JULY & AUGUST
NEW ALBUM THE STORM BEFORE THE CALM OUT 17 JUNE
Ahead of the release of his debut solo album The Storm Before The Calm this June, Chris Cheney shares the video for his new single ‘Corner Shop’, and announces a nationwide album tour for July/August.
Made in collaboration with director and film-maker Sean McDonald, the visual accompaniment for ‘Corner Shop’ takes the viewer into the mind and creative world of Cheney in a raw and honest way, focusing on the singer-songwriter as he creates a painting of an increasingly rare Australian icon – the milk bar.
Cheney says of the clip, “When I was a kid I used to spend hours drawing. Before I wanted to be a musician, I wanted to be an artist or a graphic designer. I feel like I’ve come full circle and rediscovered my love for painting and visual arts. It’s quite ironic that I should have a song all about the corner milk bar and childhood memories and that the film clip should find me once again sketching and painting just as I did when I was a kid. Music and art have always gone hand in hand for me, so it just seemed a great idea for this song to combine both.”
As a fellow child of the 80s Sean McDonald found it easy to relate to the wistful themes of the song. He says, “This song is so beautifully crafted, filled with nostalgia, reflecting on the beauty of a simpler time and I wanted the video to also represent this same spirit. We shot a lot of this clip on a super 8 camera I purchased during lockdown when I was probably longing for the same things Chris was when writing this song. We wanted the video to almost be like a scrapbook of his thoughts during this time and I was lucky enough to be allowed into his garage turned studio, turned bar, turned painting studio. It’s a little sanctuary of creativity. Seeing him create his corner shop painting was an incredible side of his artistry that was amazing to witness and I knew needed to be included in the clip.”
‘Corner Shop’ follows the release of ‘California’ and ‘Football Team’ as the next single Cheney’s forthcoming debut solo album The Storm Before The Calm (out 17 June).
