“Coco’s Lunch remains one of the most inspirational and culturally compelling A Cappella groups in the world, reflecting the better society that awaits us all if we lean into harmony.” – Deke Sharon, Musical Director/Vocal Producer ‘Pitch Perfect’ hit TV series, USA
“Coco’s Lunch is my favourite A Cappella group. A few years ago when I directed the Adelaide International Cabaret Festival I invited them to perform and they were so successful I basked in their reflected glory. Their delectable repertoire is composed and arranged by them and gloriously performed on this new album. They are better than ever.” – Barry Humphries
“Beautiful music for an extraordinary year…” – Aparna Sridhar, Soft Power Mag (INDIA) 2020
Australia’s multi-award-winning purveyors of the A Cappella art Coco’s Lunch celebrate the launch of their seventh studio album Misra Chappu released to international acclaim during the lockdown in late 2020. The album launch concert is at MEMO Music Hall from 3-5 pm (doors 2.30 pm) on Sunday 4 July 2021 with w special guest Priscilla Stanley and guest percussionists Simone Lang and Athavan Wijeyamanoharan.
This rare Melbourne performance features eight new pieces of exceptional beauty and unparalleled originality crafted by Cocos Lunch during an extraordinary time in planetary history. Misra Chappu (pron. miss-rah chah-poo) forges an adventurous new direction in contemporary vocal music. This is heart music, set to the pulse of trademark Coco’s five-part groove – music created with love, an awareness of Spirit, and with the intention of bringing healing, light, and beauty to the world.
Composers Lisa Young and Jacqueline Gawler draw deeply from the rich sonic palettes of Australia, India and Africa, and between the five singers Lisa Young, Jacqueline Gawler, Nicola Eveleigh, Emma Gilmartin and Gabrielle MacGregor, impressive alchemy brings these stories to life. Soaring angelic lines and arresting rhythmic interplay, high vibration poetry and breathtaking harmonic movement set a new benchmark for the ensemble.
With nods to Pop, Jazz, World and Folk, Misra Chappu offers a masterful feast of sound that transforms the traditional A Cappella genre with five-part South Indian vocal percussion, jazz improvisation and complex songcraft. Described as ‘a national treasure’, Coco’s Lunch have made an indelible imprint on the contemporary vocal music landscape and are dedicated to the creation of soul-enriching music to be shared with vocal ensembles and audiences worldwide.
Misra Chappu received extensive national and international airplay throughout USA, Europe, Portugual, Mexico and Spain since its November 2020 release and acclaim including:
