Another great purchase from one of the mini-cons I attend from time to time. Some of the people who person tables have some great things for sale. I went to this one with the specific idea of speaking to a friend and then spending some money. This book is has eleven short stories, each story is by a different author and the focus of each story is one of the Doctors Who. Each story is introduced with a silhouette of the Doctor. Eleven Doctors, Eleven Stories. Sounds kind of easily explained, so why did I just do that for you?

The eleven authors are:

  • Eoin Colfer
  • Michael Scott
  • Marcus Sedgewick
  • Philip Reeve
  • Patrick Ness
  • Richelle Mead
  • Malorie Blackman
  • Alex Scarrow
  • Charlie Higson
  • Derek Landy
  • Neil Gaiman

Several of these authors I’ve read before and was keen to see their writing in the Doctor Who universe. I was particularly keen to read Charlie Higson, the first book I read by him was the beginnings of a series and I haven’t managed to find the rest…yes, you’re right, I haven’t really tried, I promise I’ll get there. So this book was partly an excuse to read more by Higson. I finished this rather satisfied.

I was not particular fond of the Artemis Fowl books but I was prepared to read this short story by Eoin Colfer. Good thing I did. Nicely written, and it brings an added dimension to the First Doctor which feels very much right.

And both of my comments about these two short stories fit the entire anthology very well. The only thing I found unsatisfying about this book is that it stopped at the Eleventh Doctor, but hang on, there’s a couple of new editions with the Twelfth and Thirteenth Doctors! And each story seemed to illustrate each different Doctor very nicely, we got the mannerisms that make each iteration and something else besides.

However, I do find myself wanting more. More written by each author. It will be a pleasure to read more as I find them. I should hunt them down, stalk them in their native lands…the bookshop or library…and acquire their books for reading. But that’s not how I find my books. I’m more of an accidental book buyer, whatever I see I pick up.

If you’d like to have a look at the next book in the series, or just buy the stories individually you can see them here. This is only in ebooks this time.
