This is the Original review by Vintage Direct (written 1998)

This is the first release of this wine, which is made from the oldest Cabernet vines that belong to Elderton. The wine has been matured for 2 – 3 years in French oak.

Very deep crimson colour, with deep crimson hue. Superb aroma – quite perfumed with liquorice, violets, cedar, ripe blackcurrant and plum. Mouth-filling palate – wonderful ripe Cabernet flavour, with trademark background flavours of cedar, spice, dark chocolate, and spicy oak.

Excellent depth and persistence. Fine-grained dry, but well-balanced tannins, making it an excellent counterpoint to the ripe blackcurrant, spice, liquorice, dark chocolate and prune fruit flavour. An outstanding tribute wine! Cellar 3 – 4 years. (2004 – 2005)

Lock Down weekend, with lunch…

Stored in a cool cellar for 23 years this is the time to open it (LockDown Number 6) Who gives a shit, Time to drink this little baby.

This wine is under cork, not Stelvin. Thank Christ and the lord above. What the last 23 years have done to this wine, is wonderful. It is in stunning condition. (Truly singing)

On the nose fresh ripe red fruit followed by warm cedar and soft spice. In the mouth this wine is alive with soft fruit tannins. I can not believe the power of the fruit flavours that are still wrapt in cedar, as bright as the day they were bottled.

The Rot didn’t set in on this one. Mr Neil Ashmead Every now and then you get a winner.

And I just won Lotto.
