Emerald Hill Art Group celebrates 35 artistic years

The works of 18 dedicated Emerald Hill Art Group (EHAG) members will soon be on show to celebrate the group’s 35th anniversary.

Formed in 1984 when the Port ‘n’ South Living and Learning Centre offered art classes through the Baptist Hall on Ross Street, Port Melbourne, the Group has maintained its creative passion over the years.

Following the closure of the Ross Street Centre in 1997, the EHAG took up residence at Sol Green Centre, continuing their journey of artistic practice.

In their own words, EHAG aim to ‘take art seriously and to have fun and enjoy the experience’ by supporting each other’s artistic endeavours, broadening their horizons by attending exhibitions and lectures and holding at least one exhibition a year.

Visitors to Emerald Reflections: 35 Years may experience a sense of déjà vu, as the group reinterprets previous EHAG exhibition themes, such as ‘The Meaning of Red’, ‘About Time’, and ‘Out of Line’.

Mayor Dick Gross congratulated the group on reaching another milestone.

“The Emerald Hill Art Group has gone from strength to strength over the past 35 years. This community-run organisation is an asset to our community and the skill and creativity of its members make the annual exhibition a highlight of the CSAS calendar,” Cr Gross said.

To further extend themselves, the Group engages a tutor active in the art world to support and challenge members as they work in their own style, medium and subject of choice. The tutor is tenured for two years to ensure rotation of styles and to keep ideas fresh.

Emerald Reflections: 35 Years can be viewed at the Carlisle Street Arts Space from 29 October to 27 November 2019.
