AUSTRALIANS CAN JOIN THE MISSION VIA GARNIER’S PLANT A CORAL CAMPAIGN

L’Oréal Groupe’s leading mass-market beauty brand, Garnierhas announced the return of its ‘Plant a Coral’ campaign, continuing its multi-year partnership with globally recognised environmental charity, the Great Barrier Reef Foundation to support the survival of one of the natural wonders of the world, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

With 500,000 baby corals already dispersed by Garnier to enhance the resilience of Reefs in the Whitsundays region in 2023, Garnier Australia has committed to dispersing 700,000 corals in 2024 through its Plant A Coral campaign. The continued partnership with the Foundation, will see Garnier continue to help restore damaged areas of the Great Barrier Reef through coral planting, with the number of corals dispersed reaching 1.2 million baby corals in total by the end of 2024.

In the summer of 2023/24, the Great Barrier Reef experienced its fifth mass coral bleaching event in eight years, reinforcing the importance of the vital work the Foundation is doing to support one of the most beautiful, complex ecosystems on the planet, including through its partnership with Garnier.

Garnier Australia and New Zealand Marketing Director, Alexander Bachem, said the brand is extremely proud to continue its support for the Great Barrier Reef Foundation and play a role in helping restore the world’s largest coral reef system.

“For over 120 years, Garnier has been committed to more sustainable beauty for all of us, with products that offer maximum efficacy for you and reduced impact on the planet. But this commitment goes beyond just our products, and as one of the world’s biggest beauty brands, we feel a strong responsibility to help protect the natural beauty of the world, and what better place to start than the natural wonder that’s right in our backyard – the Great Barrier Reef,” said Mr Bachem.

“This year, we’re proud to increase our support towards the Great Barrier Reef Foundation so that they can continue to disperse baby corals on areas of the Reef that need it most through an innovative technique called Coral IVF, helping the Reef to recover following last summer’s mass coral bleaching event.”

The Great Barrier Reef Foundation is the lead charity for the Reef, formed in response to the first mass coral bleaching of the reef in 1998. The collaborative organisation raises funds, invests in innovative ideas, and designs scalable conservation programs in Australia to help to restore the Reef which stretches over an area of approximately 348,000 square kilometers, which is the equivalent of 70 million football fields.

Great Barrier Reef Foundation Managing Director, Anna Marsden explains that it is thanks to contributions from partners such as Garnier, that the Foundation is able to support the Reef to recover in the face of climate change and other threats.

“Our Great Barrier Reef is an incredible natural wonder, but she is one of the most vulnerable ecosystems on the planet. As we’ve seen from the mass bleaching event the Reef suffered last summer, climate change impacts to the Reef are becoming more frequent and it no longer has enough time to recover naturally. More than ever, it needs help to recover, which is why our partnership with Garnier is so important. It allows us to help restore critical reef habitats for threatened species.”

“Last year, thanks to the support of Garnier we partnered with local tourism operators and researchers to enhance the resilience of Whitsundays reefs by deploying 500,000 coral babies via the Coral IVF method. Now with their continued support, we’re able to plant even more coral babies this year, further helping to conserve and restore the Reef,” Ms Marsden added.

Garnier’s 2024 Plant A Coral Campaign will be live in Australia at all Coles stores nationally from 25 September to 5 November 2024.For every Garnier product purchased from Coles during this time, Garnier will assist the Great Barrier Reef Foundation to plant a coral on the Great Barrier Reef in the 2024 coral spawning season.

Coles General Manager of Sustainability Brooke Donnelly said the retailer was united with Garnier in its mission to protect the Reef for future generations through its 10-year partnership with the Great Barrier Reef Foundation.

“We’re proud to be offering our customers a way to help restore and protect one of the world’s natural wonders – the Great Barrier Reef. Like Garnier, we’re driven to help support the regeneration and resilience of the Reef and encourage our customers to get behind this important campaign,” said Ms Donnelly.

Beyond its partnership with the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, Garnier has delivered a number of sustainability initiatives and committed to ambitious targets as part of its journey to Greener Beauty, including:

  • In 2024, Garnier is the largest beauty brand worldwide to be approved by Cruelty Free International under the Leaping Bunny Programme, which means that every single stage of development, from ingredient manufacturing to material development and final product formulation does not involve testing on animals.
  • In 2023;
    • 18,029 tons of virgin plastic were saved, thanks to the replacement of virgin plastic with recycled plastic in some product packaging including Micellar Water, Fructis Shampoo & Conditioner and Pure Active Hydrating Cleansers

Garnier’s commitment to the Great Barrier Reef Foundation falls under parent company, L’Oréal Groupe’s “L’Oréal for the Future” program which has seen the Groupe commit to a range of social and environmental goals by 2030.
