The Japanese automobile market is majorly driven by three brands, Toyota, Nissan and Mitsubishi. Over the years, Mitsubishi brand has grown in popularity and enjoys a credible reputation for its reliability and safety. In 2011, Mitsubishi Motors was the sixth-largest Japanese automaker and the nineteenth-largest worldwide by production. Their story began in 1870 with the founding of a shipping trading company by Yataro Iwasaki. In 1917, the company produced its first passenger vehicle, Mitsubishi Model A, Japan’s first series-production automobile. In 1970, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries automobile department became independent and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation began manufacturing and marketing automobiles. The company has vehicle manufacturing facilities in Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, and Indonesia. In its current lineup, the company features cars like ASX, Eclipse Cross, Mirage, Triton, Pajero, Outlander and many more.

The World’s First Plug-in Hybrid SUV

Mitsubishi continues to lead the way in the development of some of the world’s most advanced and innovative electric vehicle (EV) technologies. The company is accelerating innovation for the next generation of extraordinary vehicles. In 2013, Mitsubishi launched the world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV, the Outlander PHEV. The plug-in hybrid employs a high-capacity drive battery, front and rear motors, generator and petrol engine to maximise fuel efficiency and minimise emissions. In pure EV mode, the SUV uses both front and rear electric motors purely driven from battery power with zero emissions and no engine noise.

The SUV Expert

Mitsubishi Motors continues to push the boundaries of cutting edge SUV and 4WD innovation. While many automobile companies are recent SUV converts, Mitsubishi is an early pioneer with the most diverse ranges – from compact, stylish Eclipse Cross, to the king of the off-road 4×4 SUVs, the Shogun Sport. Their first SUV came out in 1953. In fact, they made a 4×4 prototype vehicle as long ago as 1936. The medium-sized SUV, Eclipse Cross is sleek, modern and sporty. The car is available in 2WD or 4WD, with cutting-edge connectivity and safety, and dedicated off-road modes for all conditions. The current Mitsubishi SUV models are ASX, Eclipse Cross, Outlander, Pajero and Pajero Sport.
