Impromptunes is Australia’s leading improvised musical comedy troupe, combining the mischief of improvisation with the magic of musical theatre.
The troupe debuted in 2013 and has since performed across Australia and internationally at Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Perth Fringe World, Adelaide Fringe, Bondi Festival and Edinburgh Fringe.
Each live show is approx. one-hour improvised musical (with a live pianist!), based on a single audience suggestion. All of the music, dialogue, songs and dance routines are completely made up on the spot.
The cast of Impromptunes features hand-selected performers from both Melbourne’s comedic improvisation scene and Australia’s musical theatre academies.
The Toorak Times sent lead photographer Lord Murray Schoorman from Peak Hour Images along to capture some candid shots of the group ahead of their new residency in St Kilda.
You’ll be on the edge of your seat throughout as the Impromptunes cast improvises a musical full of hijinks, harmonies and hilarity.
It’s unrehearsed. It’s unpredictable. It’s a whole lot of fun. It’s Impromptunes!
After having seen one of the shows, Lord Murray reports the skill required is extraordinary, “you have to think on your feet, come up with content that is not only funny and entertaining but also musical and theatrical. The ability to harness all of that while telling a story just proves the high calibre of these performers.”
Their next seasons opens on Friday 4 August 2023 at the Alex Theatre, St Kilda VIC 3182 and tickets can be pre-purchased here:
