JS Bach – Baroque Gems for Advent
Melbourne Bach Chamber Choir & Melbourne Baroque Orchestra
present two glittering November concerts
Melbourne Bach Choir completes its superb 2022 concert season with two Chamber Choir performances featuring JS Bach’s most spectacular and best loved works.
The MBCC is joined by the Melbourne Baroque Orchestra and a host of outstanding soloists to herald Advent (and celebrate the approach of Christmas) with two concerts:
on Saturday evening 19 November at St Paul’s Cathedral and the following Saturday afternoon at Ballarat Central Uniting Church.
Artistic Director Rick Prakhoff (Brunswick East) conducts the mouth-watering selection of cantatas, suites and motets with featured soloists
Jacqueline Porter, soprano (Seaford); Timothy Reynolds (Blackwood), tenor; and Simon Meadows (Glenlyon), baritone. Plus MBC scholar Saskia Mascitti of Elwood.
Nothing celebrates the festive season like Bach and this program of joyful works features two of his favourite cantatas:
No.140 Wachet auf! (Sleepers awake!) and No.62 Nun komm der Heiden Heiland (Come, Saviour of the Nations).
The program also includes the double-chorus motet Der Geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf BWV226,
and the festive Orchestral Suite (or ‘ouverture’) No 1 BWV 1066 – all with the outstanding Melbourne Baroque Orchestra on period instruments.
MBC’s partnership with Melbourne Baroque Orchestra for this concert gives the chance to hear these works performed at baroque pitch (A=415)
and with wonderful period instruments including the rarely heard violino piccolo and taille (baroque alto oboe).
