Moving Pictures - Alex Smith taken by Chris Carroll MED

Moving Pictures have been having a blast out on the road with James Reyne.  So much so that they have announced that they will be doing a few of their own headline gigs plus another show with James Reyne at Perth’s mighty Metropolis Night Club.  See all the new dates and ticketing info listed below.

The Australian musical landscape in the 1980’s was very heavily shaped and influenced by the band Moving Pictures.  Formed in 1978 by Alex Smith, Garry Frost, Charlie Cole, Paul Freeland, Ian Lees, and Andrew Thompson, together, they jumped out of the blocks with 1981’s #1 smash album Days Of Innocence and would go on to release three original albums from 1981 through to 1988.

Days Of Innocence produced by Charles Fisher; delivered the energetic Bustin’ Loose and the empassioned, – and often covered – chart topping smash hit; What About Me? This song would go on to be awarded ‘Best Single’ at the 1982 Countdown Music Awards and was the second highest selling single in Australia that year.  What About Me? also entered the Billboard Top 40 and remained in the US singles charts for a massive 26 weeks.  The song also made it into the illustrious Billboard Hot 100 singles list for 1983 – a rare feat indeed for an Australian band.

In 1983, after some relentless touring, the band recorded and released their sophomore album Matinee – also produced by Charles Fisher and featuring the Back To The Streets single and evocative album cut Sisters Of Mercy.  Non-stop touring finally took its toll, with founding member Garry Frost and the band parting ways

(Garry would soon go onto to establish the also hugely successful band ‘1927’).

Moving Pictures continued to tour Australia successfully but eventually decided to call it a day and their final album The Last Picture Show – a live best of – was released in 1988 and based upon their final tour by the same name in 1987.

In 2011, in order to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the release of Days Of Innocence , the circa ‘84 Moving Pictures line up of Cole, Frost, Lees, Meyer, Smith and Thompson reformed and performed a sell-out national tour, including a very special night at Sydney’s iconic State Theatre.  This tour created a spark and energy that galvanised the band and although its members are scattered across the globe, the band are really keen to tour once more.

So in mid-2015, the band approached their Australian based touring agent who in turn contacted Liberation Music about the possibility of Moving Pictures recording an acoustic album of their greatest hits and performing live across the country to promote it.

It is with great pleasure that Liberation and the Harbour Agency can confirm that one of Australia’s most cherished pub rock bands of the 80’s, Moving Pictures – featuring Alex Smith, Garry Frost, Andy Thompson, Ian Lees, Charlie Cole and Mark Meyer – have released an acoustic selection of their classic tracks known as Picture This for release out now.

Moving Pictures are touring national with James Reyne on his ‘A Day In The Sun’ Summer 2015/2016 national tour.   Moving Pictures have also just announced that as well as touring  with James Reyne, they will be doing some of their own headline shows.   See all the existing dates plus the new dates and ticket information listed below.
