The Palais Forecourt is set to become the jewel in St Kilda’s crown, as Council, together with the Victorian Government work together to transform the existing road space into a public space which will connect the Palais Theatre and Luna Park.
Council will contribute $2.5 million to the redevelopment, with an additional $1.3 million
announced by the Victorian Government as part of its $154 million Local Parks Program.
Initially, the scope of the project was limited to the implementation of a Hostile Vehicle
Mitigation strategy, however, with the additional funding, the Palais Forecourt will also include a plaza and grass lawn area, where residents and visitors can take in the views of St Kilda.
Mayor Bernadene Voss said the announcement was great news for the community.
“The safety of our community is incredibly important, which is why we had already begun planning the redevelopment of the Palais Forecourt with an integrated Hostile Vehicle Mitigation strategy.
The grant from the Victorian Government means we can incorporate additional features into our design, creating a fantastic space for our community to enjoy,” Cr Voss said.
“Over the past couple of months, we have become even more aware of the importance of outdoor space to our community and I’m excited for this project to get underway.”
Council also received another $1.3 million as part of the Local Parks Program to create a new park in Kings Plaza, South Melbourne, one of Port Phillip’s most built-up areas.
“As our City grows, it’s important to create outdoor space for our residents and visitors, so everyone can experience the joys of living, working or playing in Port Phillip,” Cr Voss said.
Construction will commence in October 2020.
